Learning Aim A
Equality
Equality means that no one should be discriminated against or judged unfairly. It means that
people should not be treated differently or unfairly because of their gender, religion, age, or
diet. For example, if a person believes that they can only consume specific foods, they would
feel disrespected if a hospital does not accommodate their beliefs, and it would block their
recovery. (Health and Social Book 1 Unit 5) (P1)

Diversity
Diversity means to value and respect the differences, the value of the cultures and beliefs of
people. If you are unwilling to try and do this, you will be unable to learn about them or from
them. You will be unable to understand them or meet their wants if you're caring for them.
Similarly, you want to respect and value differences like age, gender, and disability. It is a
legal demand for health and social care organisations to respect and value all people,
regardless of their religious or cultural beliefs, attitudes, or differences. (Health and Social
Book 1 Unit 5) (P1)

Discrimination
Discrimination is when someone develops a prejudice against someone or a group of
individuals. This may be for reasons like age, gender, race, ethnicity, non-secular beliefs,
sexuality, ability, health, or disability, they may then discriminate against that person or
group and treat them differently. For example, if someone didn’t get a job because of their
sexual orientation. (Health and Social Book 1 Unit 5) (P1)

Equality Act
The equality act makes it law that each personal, public, and voluntary organisation should
not discriminate against workers and people that use their services supported characteristics
like age, race, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, religion, or beliefs. Everyone is
protected through the Equality Act together with children and young people, however, young
people that go to school don't seem to be protected against age discrimination. Additionally,
the Equality Act includes data on ways to stop discrimination and promote equality. (Health
and Social Book 1 Unit 5) (P1)

Types of discrimination
There are four types of discrimination which are unfair, direct, indirect, and positive. When a
person is treated unfairly in comparison to another, this is known as unfair discrimination.
When someone is rude, hostile, or offensive to someone because they perceive them to be
different, this is known as direct discrimination. When a practise, policy, or rule applies to
everyone in the same way, but has a greater impact on some people than others, this is
known as indirect discrimination. When a decision is made in a person's favour because of
something unique about them, this is known as positive discrimination. (Health and Social
Book 1 Unit 5) (P1, M1)
Valerie and Aisha may experience unfair, direct, indirect, and positive discrimination which
suggests they wouldn’t be treated equally. Firstly, Valerie may experience direct
discrimination from the local teenagers that are bullying because of her having mental
health problems, and being obese. This is a direct form of discrimination as she is being
treated terribly simply because she is different from everybody else. Secondly, Valerie could
experience positive discrimination, from the housing association, who has supported her by
1

,providing her with a flat to live in, also she receives universal benefits from the job centre, to
assist her with living prices as she is out of work. (P1, M1)
Firstly, Aisha may additionally experience direct discrimination as she has vascular dementia,
lives alone in a very dirty flat with no food, and hears the voice of friends that she no longer
has contact with, so people may treat her differently or not want to be close to her. Also, this
might then lead to people, not talking to her, calling her names, or completely ignoring her.
Secondly, Aisha might also experience positive discrimination from her neighbour who has
raised considerations relating to the state of her flat and her not having any food in her
cabinets or refrigerator, also the neighbour thinks that Aisha isn't safe living alone, as she
has no family and could be neglecting herself. (P1, M1)

Impacts of discrimination
Discrimination will affect people in varied ways and during these cases, the discrimination
that Valerie and Aisha experience could affect their lives massively. Emotionally the problems
that Valerie might face from discrimination are if the teenagers keep bullying her, it may lead
to her self-esteem and mental health getting worse, which may lead to her neglecting herself
or not requesting support, also in extreme cases it may lead to self-harm or suicide.
Additionally, this might affect Valerie as she is afraid to go back home as the bullying could
have an impact on her mental and physical health. This might affect Valerie physically, as she
won’t be able to travel anywhere, which might cause her to lose her confidence in meeting
and trusting people, also she might get depressed and lonely in her flat. Additionally, if she
does not get assessed for any support to enhance her hearing within the future, she might
find it hard to listen to music, watch TV and be able to hear people speak. (P1, M1)
Similarly, if Aisha experiences discrimination, it could vastly impact her life. Physically as
Aisha has vascular dementia, that might cause issues with concentrating, she might feel
disoriented or confused and have an issue walking or keeping balance, which may lead to her
falling over and injuring herself. Also, another impact of vascular dementia is mood and
temperament changes which may lead to her being a danger to herself and others around
her, which could cause them to stay away from her. Additionally, she listens to and speaks to
the voices of her former friends that she no longer contacts which might cause her to be
afraid or unstable if the voices are angry, which may cause people to make fun of her or call
her names, and could cause her self esteem to worsen. This might affect her emotionally, as
she wanders around the garden at night and mutters to herself, which may lead to people
being afraid of her or being mean to her, as they might think she is crazy, which could
severely impact her emotion. (P1, M1)

Preventing discrimination for Valerie and Aisha
However, if the discrimination that they face was prevented, it could have a huge impact on
both of their lives. Firstly, if Valerie doesn’t experience discrimination from the local
teenagers she could feel safe to go home, without the fear of being bullied about her obesity,
it could cause her to feel happy with life or make some friends, which could positively affect
her mental health and lift her self-esteem. On the https://www.humanrightscareers.com/
issues/anti-discrimination-quotes-that-shaped-our-understanding-of-equality/ website, it
states that “We call upon all communities to be tolerant—to reject prejudice based on cast,
creed, sect, religion or gender. To ensure freedom and equality for women so that they can
flourish. We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.”. This relates to Valerie
because if discrimination was prevented she would be seen in the same way that everyone
else is and will not be judged for being obese or having mental health problems. Additionally,
if discrimination was prevented for Valerie, the hospital would allow her to get assessed for

2

,her hearing, which could make her happier as she will be able to hear drastically better and
she won’t feel as low because she knows that people are there to help her. Overall if
discrimination was prevented, it would hugely impact her life as she wouldn’t need to worry
about people bullying her or not getting the support she needs, which will cause her to be
happier and could positively affect her mental health. (P1, M1)
Similarly, if discrimination was prevented, Aisha wouldn't need to worry about people
judging her due to her practising Buddhism or her having vascular dementia which would
cause her life to change for the better due to her being treated the same as everyone else
and not looked at differently. Also preventing discrimination can affect her in different ways
such as if people start talking to her or spending time with her they could encourage her to
eat healthier, exercise, or take her medicine which will help reduce the rate at which brain
cells are lost. Additionally, if she didn’t have to worry about being discriminated against she
could spend her time taking care of herself and practising Buddhism. Overall if discrimination
was prevented, it would hugely impact her life as she wouldn’t need to worry about living
alone or having vascular dementia. (P1, M1)
Overall if discrimination was prevented, Valerie and Aisha would be able to enjoy life and live
how they want, and not have to fear being discriminated against because they are different
from other people. (P1, M1)

Skills and attributes
Skills are the ability to do something well or to be an expert in something and personal
attributes are the qualities or characteristics that make an individual who they are: i.e. their
personality. The way health professionals are underpinned by a set of basic values that
influence working practices and enable relationships to be built between service providers
and users. These include the 6Cs, people skills, communication skills and observation skills.
(Health and Social Book 1 Unit 5) (P2)

The 6Cs
Valerie and Aisha in both of these case studies have a diverse set of requirements. Valerie,
for example, suffers from mental health issues and poor self-esteem, both of which have a
significant influence on her life. Aisha is another example, since she is dealing with a variety
of issues, including vascular dementia and needing to go to the hospital lately to recuperate
from pneumonia. As a result, health and social care workers will require a diverse set of skills
and qualities in order to address a wide range of needs. They can achieve this by following
the 6Cs, which are; care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and
commitment. (P2, M1, M2)
The first one among the 6Cs is care which is vital for care professionals to possess, as care is
the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of
somebody or something. In these case studies, care should be used once addressing the
difficulties for Valerie and Aisha. Firstly once care professionals start treating Valerie, they
would start deciding what's best for her and what her needs are, for example, they might
offer her food or drink. Also, the carers should treat Valerie with respect and perceive that
she would possibly feel afraid to ask for things. They should take care of her properly as if
they don’t, it could cause her to feel distressed, which might then worsen her mental state
and cause larger issues. Secondly, Aisha should be treated with care as she has vascular
dementia, and is just recently just recovering from a bout of respiratory disease, and as she
hears the voices of her former friends she no longer has contact. Aisha would need a care
practitioner that isn’t judging and is there for her to confide in. Care is very important in
health and social care as Valerie and Aisha should feel that their dignity, beliefs, and desires
3

, are thought of and brought under consideration once being cared for. (P2, M1, M2)
The second of the 6Cs is compassion which is vital inside a health and social care setting
because being compassionate from the beginning sets an honest impression which is crucial
when caring for patients so that they can trust you. Compassion is how care is given through
relationships supported by empathy, respect, and dignity. In these case studies, showing
compassion to Valerie and Aisha is very important because it doesn’t make them feel
worthless and it helps them to understand that the difficulties they face are completely
different from anyone else. Firstly, showing compassion to Valerie is important due to her
being bullied regarding her obesity. When she is going through this emotional time, it will
make her feel like she needs someone there to understand what's happening and be caring
towards her, which could make her understand that the care practitioner is there for her.
Secondly, Aisha should also be treated with compassion, as she has vascular dementia.
However if the professional shows an excessive amount of compassion towards her, it might
affect her emotional state. (P2, M1, M2)
Another one among the 6Cs is competence and this can be the power to try to do something
with success or effectively. In these case studies, competence should be shown when
addressing the difficulties that Valerie and Aisha face. Firstly, this might be demonstrated
once caring for Valerie by constantly understanding the updated knowledge and skills of
what services there are to assist Valerie to learn a lot of information concerning having
mental health problems and what her rights and responsibilities are. Additionally, if they
don’t know how to assist Valerie it may then affect her emotionally, socially, physically and
intellectually. Secondly, competence is also required for Aisha’s case because knowing what
to do to assist and deal with situations for Aisha with her conditions puts her out of the way
of any harm. However, if competence isn't used once helping Aisha then that might place her
in a ton of danger, for instance, Aisha’s condition will cause her to forget things or get
confused therefore if she speaks to the incorrect person then it may lead to abuse or capture,
etc. (P2, M1, M2)
The next one among the 6Cs that's necessary is communication, this is often merely
exchanging information by writing, speaking, etc. Listening is as necessary as what we are
saying or doing and communication is the key to a decent workplace with benefits for those
in care and workers. In these cases studies, it is apparent that this is vital for both Valerie and
Aisha as communicating with each of them can then offer an understanding of what they're
each thinking and what they need. Also, effective communication is very important as it
helps develop a relationship with service users and families. Firstly, for instance, once the
care practitioners communicate with Valerie concerning her mental health problems they
need to be empathic as this condition may be a life-changing factor, so having good
communication with her is significant. Secondly, it is also important to have good
communication with Aisha, because of her having vascular dementia which may make it
hard for her to understand what they are saying. (P2, M1, M2)
Another one among the 6Cs is courage and this can be extremely vital for care professionals
to possess. Courage allows someone to do the correct thing for those who they take care of,
to speak up if they have any concerns and to possess personal strength and embrace new
ways of operating. In these case studies, courage should be used when addressing the
difficulties for Valerie and Aisha so that they know that someone is there to support them.
Firstly, this might be demonstrated once caring for Valerie, such as when she had surgery for
her appendix, courage was shown here when the care professional did surgery on her to get
rid of her appendix, the surgeon would need to quickly take away the appendix before it did
any harm to her. Secondly, it is also the same for Aisha, as her carer must have the courage
to inform her of any problems because of her conditions and the care practitioner must also
