Indigestion (dyspepsia):
Symptoms include: lower abdominal pain, belching, nausea, bloating, distention, all
of which are usually provoked by eating.
Affects 40% (40m) of the UK population annually
Only 1.2m consult their GP
With 12,000 being referred for endoscopy
If over the age of 45, gastric cancer should be ruled out by endoscopy
Stomach and duodenal ulcers:
1) Epidemiology -
Is usually a benign ulcer disease of the upper GI tract
Ratio of duodenal to gastric ulcers is 4:1
There is a wide age distribution and peak incidence is around middle age
These type of ulcers are more common in males
2) Risks –
Stomach ulcers are most likely to become malignant
Duodenal ulcers are usually benign
3) Symptoms –
Upper abdominal pain, appetite loss, weight loss, anaemia, blood in faeces
Symptoms often relieved by milk, eating, rest and antacids
