ASSIGNMENT 9A
Understand the interrelationship and nervous
control of the
cardiovascular and respiratory systems

P1 – DESCRIBE THE ORGANISATION
AND FUNCTION OF THE NERVOUS
SYSTEM IN RELATION TO
CARDIOVASCULAR AND RESPIRATORY
REQUIREMENTS
The nervous system is a system in the body in which many processes and functions
are controlled with the use of electrical impulses to carry out these responses. The
system is complex and contains a variety of subsystems such as the central nervous
system (CNS) and peripheral system (PNS)

Central nervous system (CNS) Peripheral nervous system (PNS)

This is a subsystem within the In contrast to the central nervous system
nervous system that includes this system is classified by a network of
two major organs known as the neurones which carry electrical impulses
brain and spinal cord. The brain from information such as a stimuli. A
is also involved in controlling the stimulus is a change in the external
cardiovascular requirements of environment which triggers a signal within
the body since it receives the body by sensory cells which detect this
impulses change.

, Further divisions of the nervous system
have been made for example it is split
up into two subsections known as the
somatic nervous system and autonomic
nervous system. Both systems differ by
a large amount. Below describes both of
these divisions and how they differ.

Somatic nervous system

The somatic nervous system controls all the responses in the body which are known
to be voluntary such as eating carried out via the skeletal muscles of the body.
voluntary responses involve undergoing conscious thought since signals are sent to
the brain. The somatic nervous system is assisted in its function by the use of
sensory neurons and motor neurons.

Autonomic nervous system

On contrary to the somatic nervous system the autonomic nervous system is
designed to undertake the function of internal organs such as the heart and its
ability to beat without the need for conscious thought. In other words this system
allows the functioning of all the involuntary responses of the body. The
cardiovascular requirement of the body for instance heart rate and the respiratory
requirements such as ventilation are controlled by this sub system. In order to carry
out these requirements the system uses two main neurons known as sensory
neurons and motor neurons. Furthermore the medulla within the brain are
responsible for sending signals to regulate
breathing in the respiratory system.

Sensory neurones

Sensory neurons detect changes in the
environment and send the necessary
information for the body to respond in
