Topic 5 : ON THE WILD SIDE
5.1 : Understand the terms ecosystem , community population and habitat

Ecosystem Meaning

All living organisms found in one area , combined with non living aspects of
their environment

Community meaning

All different species that live in one area and interact with each other

Population meaning

All of the individuals of a species that live in the same habitat at a given
time

Habitat meaning

The place where an organism lives in its ecoystsem

5.2 : Understand that the numbers and distribution of organisms in a habitat are
controlled by biotic and abiotic factors.

What are biotic factors and examples

Living aspects of an ecosystem like predators

What are abiotic factors and examples

Non living aspects of an ecosystem like soil pH and temperature

What is a niche

The role of an organism within its environment

5.3 : Understand how the concept of niche accounts for distribution and abundance
of organisms in a habitat.

How does niche affect the abundance and distribution of organism in a habitat

Topic 5 : ON THE WILD SIDE 1

, If two species have the same role there is interspecific competition which
excludes one species or the niche is divided according to adaptations

5.4: Understand the stages of succession from colonisation to climax community

What is stages of primary succession

Primary succession occurs when there is no life in environment and the
environment becomes colonised

Pioneer species is able to survive in harsh conditions and first to colonise

Pioneer species dies and improves abiotic factors eg soil conditions in the
environment

The greater the decomposition the better the soil nutrient levels

This allows smaller organisms to survive and grow these species
outcompete the pioneer species

Once the smaller organisms die and decompose the soil becomes better
adapted and larger organisms such as trees can grow in the environment

They outcompete the smaller more complex organisms for space and light
and prosper and grow

Reach a climax community

What is a climax community

A stable community that in a dynamic equilibrium and usually contains a
dominating species

Primary Succession in sand dunes

Primary succession in glaciers

Bare rock is the environment

Algae and Lichens are pioneer species first to colonise

Break down and decompose to increase humus content which improves
soil
