Freedom of expression, which was not as common back then as it is now, has made a

noticeable impact on all aspects of life. The film industry, for instance, is witnessing a new era of

diversity and freedom, as no topic is too much of a taboo to be tackled. Therefore, there has been

an ongoing debate on whether there should be a monitoring film censorship or not. Many argue

that freedom of expression could be a double-edged weapon if practiced in the wrong manner.

However, it is my contention film censorship is a curse in disguise.

Critics of this standpoint contend that some films could promote unnecessary propaganda

for merely the sake of it. It is argued that political and religious censorship is essential to

maintain a state of stability across the countries and reduce conflict in societies. Nevertheless,

holding back nonconfidential information or preventing any sort of exposure to diverse

perspectives is nothing but a form of dictatorial control. In fact, such censorship seems to aim for

masses’ brainwash instead of enlightenment. Not only that such censorship alters the truth at

times, but it also does not apply to other media platforms such as the news, as it serves the

purpose of higher upper-hand authorities.

Another argument against ultimate freedom of expression in films is tied to moral and

ethical appropriation. It is claimed that certain acts, sexual or violent, cannot be displayed to all

audiences, especially children. In that case, trigger warnings and age restrictions should be

obligatory, yet the film should not be aired at all if it openly discusses highly problematic or

controversial topics. Although this might be plausible, it is arguable that such concerns belong to

the authorities and not the parents. Children and teenagers are to be exposed to all shapes and

forms of topics eventually, especially with their access to the horizon of the internet. However,

it is crucial to for the parents to create a safe space for their children where they would feel free

to ask questions and find reasonable answers, despite the topic.
