Part 2: Essay

It is said from the age of six years, children have the ability to make decisions about how to vote. This
essay will evaluate that claim, considering if a six-year-old has the ability to vote. It will begin by
looking at the evidence if a child has the cognitive ability, focusing on the different stages that a child
develops. It will then consider arguments that a child has the cognitive ability. Based on the
evidence, conclude whether that a child should be able to vote at the age of six years old.

The law says that children and adolescence have the power to make their own choices and express
their thoughts. This is written in the UNCRC (1989) in the 3 P’s (Provision, Protection, and
Participation) participation meaning they can make decisions. If a child or young person is involved in
something risky, it could be dangerous for them. This would be against what is best for them. People
need protection because they could get hurt if they don’t understand what is going on. Laws are
rules that are made by governments or other authorities and define what people can and cannot do
in a particular country or society. In different parts of the world and at different times, the age at
which young people can participate in certain situations can be different. In the UK, it’s legal to have
sex when reach 16 years old whereas in Ethiopia the legal age is 18. Children are seen as capable
everywhere in the world. Making choices at different stages of life, research has found that people
have different perceptions of adolescence compared to other stages. Each place has its own set of
rules called laws. This shows that childhood is shaped by society, which agrees with what we learn in
