NR 510 Week 4 Assignment APN Professional Development Plan Paper. Running head: APN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN 1 NR 510 Week 4 Assignment APN Professional Development Plan Paper APN Professional Development Plan Paper Yudemis Rodriguez Chamberlain University NR January 2018Introduction to the APN professional development plan Regardless of ones’ career path, a professional development plan is imperative for an individual to set goals, develop a plan and schedule a timeline to achieve them (Perry, 2017). The famous saying by Winston Churchill “if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail” (Treiger, 2016) can be directly applied to someone’s career. A professional development plan can provide a visual outline and help to identify current and future needs, resources needed, and to help ensure goals are always met. Relative to the authors current nursing care and the development of the nursing process, goals are established, and later, “care” or in this case, goal achievement is evaluated. According to Perry (2017), in order for goals to be valuable they should be designed with the acronym SMART in mind. The letter S stands for specific goals, one that is clear- what does it look like and how will the author get there? For example, the author is a graduate student whose goal is to complete a master’s in nursing degree and obtain an Advanced Practice Nurse license after sitting for board exams. It is important to write down these goals and why they are important, so it is not forgotten or pushed aside as life can become overwhelming. The letter M stands for a goal that is measurable. This is evident in the authors goal statement. The letter A in the acronym stands for attainable goals. The Master’s program has provided the author with a challenge, nonetheless, while at the same time providing the appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to achieve the goal. The letter R represents realistic or a relevant goal. This goal is both high and realistic. Time represents the letter T. Time provides a sense of urgency. Working as a full-time employee, and taking care of personal matters at home, the author sets a measurable goal of two years’ time as the anticipated graduate year is 2019. The professional development plan can be modified according to ones’ current situation as life happens and things can change.
