1. Life of Malinche
Malinche es una mujer nahua originaria del actual estado mexicano Veracruz.

Nació en alrededor de 1500 a padres nobles, pero terminó en convertirse en esclava. Tras la muerte de su padre, la
madre de Malinche se casó de nuevo con otro hombre y tuvo un hijo. Su padrastro no quise que Malinche heredara
el dinero así que su madre decidió venderla. Probablemente fue vendida a un noble maya y así aprendió hablar la
lengua maya-yucateca. Llegó en otra tribu indígena, Potonchán en 1512 (así que sólo tenía 12 años).

No se sabe su nombre original, ya que tiene varios nombres como Malinalli, Marina, Malintzin y Malinche. Los
españoles la refirieron como Marina.

2. Her role as interpreter for the Spanish
Los españoles llegaron a México, específicamente Potonchán en 1519 por la segunda vez. La primera vez, habían
sido destruidos por los indígenas, pero esta vez retornaron con más armas y soldados, y los indígenas no lograron a
ganar la batalla otra vez. Tras la batalla, el pueblo autóctono decidió regalar a los españoles 20 mujeres como
esclavas para tener paz entre los bandos, y la Malinche fue una de estas mujeres.

Originariamente, Cortés entregó Malinche a uno de sus capitanes más reconocidos, Portocarrero. Pero poco
después, él regresó a España y Cortés tomó Malinche para utilizarla como intérprete. Había utilizado otro hombre
español por comunicar antes, Jerónimos de Aguilar quién había sido prisionero de los mayas, pero se dio cuenta de
que algunas tribus indígenas no hablaron la lengua maya así que necesitaba la ayuda de otra persona. La Malinche
hablaba el náhuatl y la lengua maya, así que podía traducir los mensajes en náhuatl a la lengua maya por Jerónimo
de Aguilar, quien los traduciría en el castellano por Hernán Cortes. Malinche también aprendió el castellano
rápidamente, y luego ya no necesitó de Aguilar.

3. Uncovering the betrayal plot
Aunque los aztecas eran tiranos, los españoles igualmente eran violentos y crueles hacia los pueblos indígenas.
Mataron a mucha gente y Malinche habría sido testigua a eso.

Una gran razón por que la gente mexicana cree que la Malinche es una traidora es un evento en donde 6.000
personas indígenas fueron matados en Cholula debido a una conspiración para matar Hernán Cortes que Malinche
descubrió.

Según la historia, las personas indígenas dijeron a Malinche que iban a luchar con los españoles y que ella debería
quitar para protegerse. Sin embargo, Malinche contó Hernán de este plan y los españoles mataron las personas que
eran involucrados.

Eso fue una de las más grandes masacres de la conquista.

4. Influence of Malinche in the colonisation of Mexico
Se sugiere que Malinche tenía un papel más significante que sólo interprete. Eso se muestra en la obra de Bernal
Díaz del Castillo, la verdadera historia de la conquista de nueva España y México – dice “sin la ayuda de Doña
Marina, no hubiéramos entendido los idiomas de Nueva España y de México”

Se sugiere que Malinche también tenía rol de consejera ya que daba conocimiento esencial sobre los costumbres
sociales y militares de los nativos. Cortés supo que los aztecas, que tenían control de muchas zonas de México, eran
crueles y no bien vistos por las tribus indígenas. Por lo tanto, quiso hacer unas alianzas con otros pueblos para
derrocar los aztecas y dependió en el conocimiento de Malinche para lograr su misión.

5. Lienzo de Tlaxcala
También hay evidencia de su rol en fuentes indígenas, como el Lienzo de Tlaxcala que indica que Malinche tenía
mucha influencia en Cortés - él raramente es dibujado sin ella, y a veces se dibuja solo ella dirigiendo los eventos.
