Unit 3 – The UK as a Destination
M1 – Analyse how one UK destination attracts inbound and domestic visitors and how it meets their
needs
In this assignment I will be analysing how Blackpool attracts inbound visitors and domestic visitors, and
how it meets their needs.
Around 7% of all overseas visits to the UK include a stay in the North West (2.3 million in 2012). This
makes it the third most popular area after London and the South East. Blackpool is good at providing lots of
things for visitors who have different motivations. They don’t just focus on one specific type of visitor, there
are a wide range of reasons as to why people want to visit Blackpool.

Inbound Visitors
Families from France
Blackpool will attract families from France. According to this article
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-1181485/Blackpool-bids-French-visitors-sophisticated-new-
tourism-campaign.html Blackpool resort tourism bosses are embarking upon a new campaign to promote
Blackpool to the French.
One of the main things which the family will need is access to information in their language. Blackpool have
a tourist information centre which offer information leaflets about the area in French.
The main thing which will attract the family is because of it is lovely natural feature, the beach! This will
give the family the feeling of being abroad. Blackpool attract families from France by making it accessible
for them. Blackpool has an airport nearby called Blackpool International Airport. This will be good for
them as it will mean a shorter journey. Because they have children long journeys could be a problem so
Blackpool meets their needs. The family from France will be looking for things which will occupy their
children. Blackpool must ensure they provide lots of activities for them to do in order to meet their needs.
Blackpool has a very wide range of activities suitable for families with children. Firstly they have built
attractions such as Pleasure Beach. Pleasure Beach is a theme park located on the beach. On their website it
says ‘’there are also family theme park rides for all ages, like Wallace and Gromit’s Thrill-O Matic, Tea Cups,
Thompson Carousel, Dodgems, Go Karts and a super scary Ghost Train’’. The family will not have to worry
about the children being excluded because there is something for everyone. They also have another built
attraction which is extremely popular called Blackpool Sandcastle Water Park. This is the UK’s largest
waterpark. On their website it says ‘’we cater for families with children of any age’’. Again this is good for
the family as they have two children both at different ages.
Blackpool have another form of activities which the French family can participate in. They have sports and
leisure facilities. Firstly there is Blackpool Sports Centre where the family can participate in table tennis,
badminton and rock climbing. The can also take part in an outdoor high ropes course. They also have
another sports and leisure centre called Moor Park. At More Park they have a large swimming pool. By
providing the French family with all these fun things to do will result in them having a good experience of
Blackpool. It may also result in them returning.
Blackpool will attract the French family by having a wide range of accommodation to choose from this also
meets their needs as they will need somewhere to stay. Self-catering would be a good option for the family
to pick as it will save them money. Because they are having to spend money on the activities they may not
wish to spend a lot of money eating out. Blackpool have a lots of caravan and campsites available.
Caravanning and camping remain two of the most popular ways to holiday in Britain. And, if you’re on a
budget, the caravan parks and camp sites in and around Blackpool offer a cost-effective and fun alternative
to hotels and B&Bs. I looked on visitBlackpool and here’s a bit of information about caravan parks. Many
holiday parks offer activities aimed at children throughout the day, as well as leisure facilities including
