Unit 8 – Long Haul
P4 – Describe the features and facilities that contribute to appeal of a selected long-
haul destination for different types of visitors from the UK

In this assignment I will be describing the features and facilities that contribute to the
appeal of my selected destination which is New York. Following that I will then asses the
significance of different features and facilities on the appeal of New York for different types
of visitors.

Accessibility
Methods of Transport: There are typically 2 different ways how you can travel from the
UK over to New York. The first way is by air. Companies such as Virgin Atlantic are popular
for providing flights over to New York. When flying to New York you can depart from
airports such as London Heathrow (LHR) and then when arriving in New York you will land
in John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

Another way of getting over to New York from the UK is by cruise. Companies such as P&O
Cruises offer multi centre cruises departing from Southampton in the UK and then crossing
the Atlantic over to New York, Rhode Island and Boston. On a cruise you sometimes don’t
get to spend a lot of time in one place.

Availability and Frequency: Below is a table taken from Virgin Atlantic about how often
they have flights from LHR to JFK. As you can see they operate 7 days a week and they have

, 5 flights running at different parts of the day. As you can see this is the same for return

flights as well.

Travelling Time: The duration of the flight from LHR to JFK is approximately 8 hours.
However this can be shorter if the wind is blowing in the same direction.

Costs: I looked on Virgin Atlantic and here’s a table of the different prices depending on the
class. I looked at flights for July as this is what is known as peak season.

The price for a return flight in standard economy was £651.77.

Suitability for the Traveller

Classes Available & Facilities Provided: When flying with Virgin Atlantic the traveller can
chose what class they would like to travel in. Virgin Atlantic offers the following:

Economy: Economy is the cheapest option available. You have a choice of 3 complimentary
meals to choose from, a free amenity kit which contains a pillow, blanket, eye coverer to
block out light, TV in front of you with blockbuster films, TV series and games to play. You
can also upgrade to extra legroom seats. All food and drink is free on board.
