Introduction to Telemetry
Electrocardiogram Monitoring: Graphic tracing of electrical impulses produced by heart
(waveforms represent activity of charged ions across membranes of myocardial cells)
*On a normal 12-lead ECG If everything is upside down it is still normal (if one is inverted than there may be a
problem)
Telemetry Monitoring: Continuous observation of HR & rhythm in real time (centralized
monitoring system) - collects and stores data of rhythms within pack
*Patient usually wears Holter monitor for
24-48 hours
Electrode Placement
● Each shoulder (arm leads)
● Middle (sternum)
● Each lower chest (leg leads)
Telemetry Monitoring Patient Preparation
● Clip excessive hair on chest wall
● Rub skin with dry gauze (use alcohol for oily skin)
● Apply electrodes
○ If you do not have good connection you get a lot of artifact
○ Artifact: distortion of baseline making interpretation difficult
ECG Paper
● Make sure it is a 6 second strip
● One box is 0.2 seconds
Steps in ECG Interpretation
1. Is it fast, slow, or normal?
