• Diabetes is a non-communicable disease caused by a
deficiency of insulin, which is a hormone secreted by the
pancreas.
• Type 1 diabetes is a genetic disease, where the pancreas
produces little to no insulin, or the body’s immune system
attacks the cells that produce insulin. It is a disease often
diagnosed during childhood.
• Type 2 diabetes is caused by lifestyle factors, and is linked
to obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity. Type 2 diabetes
can also be linked to genetics. It is when the body no
longer properly responds to insulin, causing high blood
glucose levels. It is often found in adults over 40.
