AC3.4 Evaluate the effectiveness of agencies in
achieving social control

Government-sponsored agencies:

Police:
- STRENTGHS = They work in the community to prevent crime, keep
the public safe and try to combat anti-social behaviour. Issue
notices, ordering people cease inacceptable behaviour and referring
matters to a court if necessary. Many specialist units are trained to
deal with issues such as terrorism.
- WEAKNESSES = media reports them in a negative way in achieving
social control. Police are labelled as institutionally racist in the
Macpherson Report 1999, which links to the ‘Puppy Farm Murderer’.
They have adequate funding, which is a major factor in achieving
social control. In 2010, the government made cuts to the police
budget which meant police dropped some investigations. Limited
budget and officers means some investigations have been
prioritised over others.

CPS:
- STRENGTHS = Work with police to achieve social control. The Full
Code test provides a fair approach to its role and allows a due
process model of justice is to be implemented.
- WEAKNESSES = funding problems and criticisms is centralised and
ineffective and too close to the police. Failure to procedure a
successful prosecution concerning female mutilation, the drop weak
cases and are criticized for the way the handle rape cases.

Judiciary:
- STRENGTHS = Authority figures ensure the trails are fair and human
rights complaints. The use of experienced and highly qualified
lawyers. It also uses a system of precedent to ensure consistency.
- WEAKNESSES = The increasing number of appeals alleging an
unduly lenient sentence. It is suggested to be ineffective and
portrayed to be out of touch with society.
