upper respiratory tract - ANS-nose, pharynx, and associated structures
lower respiratory tract - ANS-larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
Conducting zone - ANS-brings air to the site of external respiration; nose, pharynx,
larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, terminal bronchioles
Respiratory zone - ANS-site of gas exchange, respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts,
alveolar sacs, alveoli
Pharynx - ANS-Hollow tube that starts posterior to internal nares and travels down to
opening of next tube in neck
Larynx - ANS-voice box; passageway for air moving from pharynx to trachea; contains
vocal cords
Epiglottis - ANS-A flap of elastic cartilage covered with a mucous membrane; guards
entrance of glottis during swallowing
rima glottidis - ANS-opening between true vocal folds
tracheae - ANS-carries oxygen down to primary bronchi; made of semi circular
cartilaginous rings and located anterior to esophagus
primary bronchi - ANS-emerge from the inferior trachea to go to the lungs, situated in
the right and left pleural cavities
Carina - ANS-Point at which the trachea bifurcates (divides) into the left and right
mainstem bronchi; sensitive for triggering cough reflex
Terminal bronchioles - ANS-end of conducting zone; smallest bronchioles
Alveoli - ANS-air sacs in the lungs, participate in gas exchange;
Primary lobule - ANS-Contains lymphatic vessel, arteriole, venule, and terminal
bronchiole
