Traffic Collision Avoidance System - ANS-TCAS II is a type of ACAS that meets the
requirements of CAR 262AA.
Mandatory for turbine aircraft over 30 passengers or 15000 kg (CAR 5.26 and 262), while
operating within Australian Airspace.
Flight crew must be ACAS current. (CAR 5.26)

Required to be ON at all times.
(CAR 262) - ANS-Failure of TCAS system during flight in CTA must be reported to ATC
TA only mode is selected in: Engine Out operations when directed.

Components of TCAS II - ANS-TCAS Computer Unit
Top and bottom mounted TCAS directional antennas
Two Mode-S transponders
Top and bottom Mode-S transponder omni-directional antennas
Dual Mode-S/TCAS panel
Dual Electronic Flight Instrument System displays

TCAS II requires the following equipment to be functional: - ANS-TCAS Computer Unit
Mode-S Transponder
Control Panel
Air Data Computer
EFIS PFD/ND Display
Radio Altimeter

LIMITATIONS - ANS-TCAS II cannot detect Mode A only transponders or any transponder
which is switched OFF. Detection of traffic is limited to approx. 40nm laterally and +/- 2700`
vertically
Transponders have a selectable look up/down function

INHIBITS

IMPORTANT

(Vol 2 15.20.21) - ANS-All TCAS warnings are inhibited by Windshear and GPWS warnings.
The priority is Windshear, GPWS then TCAS advisories.

, Below 1000` Radio altitude all Resolution Advisories are inhibited [TCAS if in TA/RA will display
TA only].
All aural warnings are inhibited below 500` Radio altitude.

INHIBITS

(Vol 2 15.20.21) - ANS-"Increase Descent" RA advisories are inhibited below 1500` Radio
Altitude.
"Descend" RA advisories are inhibited below 1100` Radio altitude

INHIBITS Windshear - NOT TCAS of course

(VOL 2 15.20.17) - ANS-During take off and landing , new predictive wind shear caution alerts
are inhibited between 80 knots and 400' RA and new warning alerts between 100 knots and 50'
RA

TCAS Logic Parameters
The following parameters determine Caution, Warning and Collision areas: - ANS-1. Sensitivity
Level.
2. Alarm Time.
3. Protected Area.
4. Vertical Threshold.

- Displayed with TFC selected
and range on ND below 80nm

TCAS White diamond - ANS-- Within 40 nm and +/- 2700` - Displayed with TFC selected
