ASSIGNMENT 2 FOR 2ND SEMESTER 2024

FEND TUTORIALS

, SECTION A

QUESTION 1

Discuss the general precautionary measures that should be observed when you
are in control, or in the vicinity of, hot work.
(9)

The following general precautions should be observed when you are in control or in the
vicinity of hot work:

• The welding appliance should not be removed from the workshop area to other parts
of the factory without the permission of the designated official.

• The area where hot work is to be carried out should be inspected.

• All combustible material in the vicinity should either be removed, wet or suitably
covered with a non-combustible cloth like fibreglass. A check should be carried out for
any openings or cracks in the working area that may cause sparks to ignite materials
beneath it.

• Outside contractors should be given strict instructions on the procedures to be
adopted, and particularly hazardous areas should be pointed out to them.

• Fire extinguishers and hose reels should be provided near the site of welding or
cutting operations, and operators should be experienced in handling such equipment.

• When welding or cutting operations are carried out in particularly hazardous areas, it is
advisable to have a person standing by with a fire extinguisher.

• A small fire extinguisher, possibly of the dry powder type, should be fitted to the
welding trolley itself.

• Empty drums that previously contained flammable liquids should not be stored in the
vicinity of welding or cutting operations. • Empty containers that have held flammable
liquids are very dangerous, and an engineer should certify that they are thoroughly
degassed if they are to be welded or cut.
