Joel Penkman
Joel Penkman is an artist born in 1979 in New Zealand, she has worked as a graphic designer, a
freelance designer and an artist, and is now based in the UK. She paints images of foods mostly
laying down on a piece of paper. She combines her love for food and painting and puts it into her
work. Joel Penkman style is very realistic, all her paintings are realism paintings. She says that her
works are painted from a combination of her own photos and real life.

Joel Penkman tries to trigger our sweet tooth with these still paintings of foods as many of them
tend to be sweets or chocolates or just snacks. She puts her love into
these paintings as she makes her own paints. The style and individual
specific foods gives a sense of childhood nostalgia.

In this picture, is one of her works. It is a singular biscuit and it
isa custard cream. I like how the subject of the painting is so
simple yet it looks so interesting in the way that its laying
down flat on a piece of white fabric but all of it has so much
detail to the point where it looks like a photograph of an
actual biscuit. I personally really like her style of realism as her
works are so impressive, you may need to look twice to realise it’s not real. She uses
different shades of orange and yellow o create a realistic effect for the pattern of the biscuit.
There are details painted in the background such as; the shadows behind the biscuit, the
wrinkles in the paper behind the bisvuit and the texture of the material behind ther bisuit.

In this picture, is another artwork of hers but this one takes a
slightly different approach as the angle is from the side and the
lighting is shining on the delicatassy from the left side. She creates a
realistic image through the use of different colours and shades to
creates contrasts to show the textur and shape of the case of this
fondant cake. I like how she explores different angles of foods
through her paintings but still manages to capture an amazing
realistic artwork of it.

Similarly to the first image, this picture is another one of her
artworks which is of biscuits from an angle directly above.
However, in this one she has 2 biscuits: they are wafer but they
are different types of wafers. The one on the left has a pattern of
diagonal lines whereas the wafer on the right has horizontal and
vertical lines. The combination of these two types of the same
biscuit make the artwork more interesting to the eye. The details
here are also very realistic, from the shadows to the crumbs
surrounding the objects. Joel Penkham has put thought into how
to make these painting look as realistic as possible.
