Assignment 1- Land Based Activities
There is a wide range of land-based activities that individuals can take part in, all help to
improve overall physical fitness levels. Some can be done either individually or in a team
which will help enhance team moral. This assignment will include different land-
based activities, their aims, what equipment is needed, the cost of it and much more. It will
also include a comparison of these activities.
Rock Climbing
This is an activity that can be undertaken either indoors or outdoors. It involves climbing up,
down and across rock, this rock can either be real and natural outdoors or artificial rock
indoors. The main objective on this activity is to reach the top of the rock or artificial rock
walls. Rock climbing is an excellent sport as it provides a full body workout especially on the
arms and legs it also tests a climber's agility, endurance, strength and balance. It is an
individual sport but may require a spotter or someone to help them down. There are many
different rock-climbing variations which include; Top-roping, Traditional Climbing, Sport
Climbing, Bouldering and Big Wall Climbing. For this type of activity there is equipment that
is needed, rock climbing shoes which vary around £30 to £120 from go outdoors. Chalk can
also be purchased to help with grip when climbing, the price of this ranges from £2-£17
from rock run. Decathlon sell chalk bags to store chalk in, prices start from £3.50- £35. A
climbing helmet is also essential or this activity as it protects the climber if they fall, go
outdoors also sell them, their prices start from £30 and go up to around £80. Harnesses are
also needed to allow the rope to be tied in securely to protect the climber when climbing,
prices start from £36 and go up to £80 from go outdoors. Carabiners which can also be
brought from go outdoors are used to link the climbing rope to climbing protection, they
can be purchased for £5-£13. Climbing ropes are also needed to protect climbers, they can
be brought in different size and thickness, prices vary from £40- £120 from go outdoors.
Lastly, a belay device is needed to control the rope when climbing up and to safely help the
climber down the rock, go outdoors sell them for £13- £120. There are many different rock
climbing centres in the area, they include; Redpoint, Wolf Mountain Activity Centre,
Creation Climbing Centre, Rock Up and many more. Prices at these centres vary, at Redpoint
indoor climbing located in Birmingham their prices start from around £5 and go up to £8 per
person depending on age. There is outdoor rock climbing centres like rock UK. BMC is an
organisation which runs National climbing competitions every year, they take part in
different areas of the UK like Wales, Manchester, Scotland and more, the organisation puts
together competitions for children and adults, beginners or experienced climbers can
enter.
Skiing
Another land-based activity is skiing, this can be taken both indoors or outdoors. It is carried
out over snow whether this be real or artificial, it is done by wearing skis and gliding on
snow. This type of activity is a recreational one and is a form of transport. Skiing is an
individual sport. There are many variations of skiing which include; Alpine/ Downhill Skiing,
Cross-Country Skiing which is when skiers ski up hills or mountains, Freestyle Skiing which is
when a skier does tricks and turns in the air, Telemark and Off- Piste Skiing. There are many
aims and objectives of this activity depending on each individual, for some their aim is to
