Romeo and Juliet plot summary -
Act 1 prologue -
- The story is told in a more condensed version
Act 1, scene 1 -
- Set in Verona in a public place
- Servants of the Montagues (Romeo’s side) and Capulets (Juliet’s side) start a brawl in
the street
- This is to show the rivalry and tension between the two families
- This is also where we find out the information that Romeo loves Rosalind
Act 1, scene 2 -
- Set in a street
- Paris asks Capulet if he has permission to marry Juliet
- Romeo then discovers that Rosalind will be at the Capulet ball that is being held that
evening
Act 1, scene 3 -
- Set in a room in the Capulet’s house
- Lady Capulet tells Juliet about Paris’s proposal
- This is then interrupted by the nurse as she tells a lengthy story about Juliet as a baby
Act 1, scene 4 -
- Set in the street
- Romeo has a feeling that something negative will happen if he goes to the Capulet ball
but he decides to go anyway
Act 1, scene 5 -
- Set in a hall in the Capulet house
- The Montagues go to the ball and Rosalind is forgotten by Romeo once he sees Juliet
- They are recognised by Tybalt but Lord Capulet does not allow a fight
Act 2, prologue -
- The audience is then informed of the pain that Romeo and Juliet are in because they
cannot meet by the chorus
- However, it is said that passion will find a way
