The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was the result of a complex mix of economic, political, social, and regional tensions. While economic factors such as a fragile industrial sector and widespread agrarian struggles in the countryside contributed to rising discontent, they were not the sole cause of the conflict. Social divisions between the wealthy elite and the working class, along with strong separatist movements in regions like Catalonia and the Basque Country, added to national instability. However, it was the political turmoil—marked by the fall of a corrupt monarchy, a series of weak governments, and intense ideological polarization between left- and right-wing factions—that played the most immediate and decisive role in igniting the war. Conservative forces, especially the Catholic Church and the military, also reinforced traditional values and resisted progressive reforms, further deepening the divide. While economic issues laid the groundwork, political factors ultimately served as the primary catalyst for the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
