P3
Motivation: having the desire to gain or achieve something with a level of desperation.
My chosen entrepreneur Bilal Singh had multiple reasons regarding his motivation to
starting his business. Firstly, the main reason was for the financial benefits. It is well known
that entrepreneurs tend to make significant amounts of profit which is something desired by
most people including Bilal Singh. By starting a business, he well exceeded the amount of
money he was previously making, allowing him to have a much better standard of living as
an individual but also in terms of supporting his family. The second reason is intrinsic
motivation. As previously mentioned, my chosen entrepreneur has been involved in cutting
hair since he was a teenager and found that he was naturally talented and was intrigued.
This is intrinsic as Bilal Singh himself finds this to be something he is interested in and enjoys
doing as an individual making it an engaging and stimulating work thus giving him incent to
launch this enterprise. The third reason of motivation is the idea of not being employed
under the authority of someone else but rather working for yourself, giving you total charge.
Bilal Singh finds it very relieving that he does not have to answer to anyone else and is his
own boss. This also motivated him as it encouraged individualism and initiative as he can
make his own decisions and choices in correspondence with his own judgement.
The fourth reason Bilal Singh was motivated to start his business was social status. Bilal
Singh liked the idea of being a popular figure socially within the community in which his
business was surrounded by. This had other connotations which he took interest in too such
as being open to meet new people as well as create links with other local entrepreneurs
that could potentially further benefit him in the future. A fifth reason my chosen
entrepreneur was motivated to start his business was to follow in his uncle’s footsteps. Bilal
Singh looked up to his uncle and was taught how to cut hair by him. This meant that he
would spend lots of time in his uncles barber shop and always admired him as a role model
considering he was always learning from and trying to be as skilled as him in this field of
work. As a result, Bilal Singh wanted to show how skilled and capable he had become, hence
why he worked so hard and was motivated to prove this by starting his own barber shop.
The final reason my chosen entrepreneur was motivated to start a local business was to give
something to others whilst benefitting himself. Bilal Singh is greatly in favour of this type of
business as he gets to do what he takes pride in as well as earn money while making
customers happy meaning everyone benefits. The idea of this positive exchange further
motivated him as he realised how rare it is for the average person to get a long term job in a
profession they genuinely enjoy doing, resulting in him becoming even more dedicated to
take this opportunity and utilise his experiences to the fullest.
