C807 – Coding Management Task 2 Corporate and Coding Compliance 2 Corporate and Coding Compliance With each new code released, is a coder who must ensure they compliant with federal guidelines. It is very important for the staff to understand and follow the compliance plan completely. Coders must also know and understand there will be consequences for being noncompliant. Not following the compliance plan is not only unethical, but it is also illegal and could result in disciplinary consequences. [CITATION She09 l 1033 ] Compliance plans are designed to allow organizations to follow federal guidelines and should be constructed to keep all staff from avoiding any illegal and unethical activities. The Federal Sentencing Guidelines (FSG) has published the necessary seven steps that will assist the healthcare facility meet the minimum requirements of due diligence, they are as follows: 1. Establish compliance standards and procedures. 2. Assign overall responsibility to specific high-level individual(s). 3. Use due care to avoid delegation of authority to individuals with an inclination to get involved in illegal actions. 4. Effectively communicate standards and procedures to all staff. 5. Utilize monitoring and auditing system to detect non-compliant conduct. 6. Enforce adequate disciplinary sanctions when appropriate. 7. Respond to episodes of non-compliance by modifying program, if necessary. Step 1: The organization must have established compliance standards and procedures to be followed by its employees and other agents that are reasonably capable of reducing the prospect of criminal conduct.
