Interview questions and answers 2022 Gerontology ATI Tell me about yourself - ANS-Thanks for the question -Vanessa Wan -Graduate from UNSW. a resident medical officer at Dubbo Base Hospital, -brief background, talk about my clinical experience, academic achievements and some other skills. And I'd also love to share my personal reasons for applying. Clinical: -Interested in critical care medicine: 2 terms of emergency, anaesthetics and ICU -apart, several electives, coffs harbour anaesthetics -Working in a rural hospital has provided me with numerous opportunities to learn and become a better and independent clinician -E.g. Taken on some registrar roles when the opportunities arose; anaesthetics, conducted pain rounds, taken on consults for acute pain services, assessed patients in preadmision clinic -procedural skills: ultrasound guided cannulation, bag mask ventilation, direct laryngoscopy among with other clinical skills listed on my resume Academic: -done several courses to improve my clinical skills -courses in ALS-1, ALS-2, X-rays interpretation, and have signed up for BASIC, intensive airway management, anaesthetic crisis management and use of ultrasound in rural emergency medicine courses later in the year. academic research, and have published two research articles on treatment of tumour cells using hyperthermia and chemo and non-chemo therapeutic agents) and on association between renal impairment and cerebral small vessel disease). - first prize for presenting my research at the Alliance NSW Junior Doctors' Conference. - a scholarship to attend the Rural Medical Australia Conference later this year. -presented in hospital grand rounds -conducted tutorials for medical students. Efficient Situation: efficient and organised- ability to stay on top of tasks Task: Learnt from numerous night shifts ED- 2 members- resident and registrar registrar busy with trauma calls, or exisiting patients Deal with the rest Action: prioritise patients, eyeball multiple patients, Initiate first line investigations and management Results: many complements from other members of the team (regs, nurses), highlighted in appraisal forms by supervisor 2. Commitment to improve knowledge and skills -mentioned before, several courses, ALS-1, ALS-2, online interpretation of xrays, scheduled for basic, intensive airway management, rural anaesthetic crisis management, use of ultrasound in emergency medicine -self learning =g courses online, medmastery, ECGs interpretations, use of ventilator in ICU etc. -academic research, published 2 journal articles Weakness: 1. Improve on public speaking Situation: Not a native speaker, not as confident, need a lot of preparation before giving a speech or talking in public Actions: Pushed myself to do it more Signed up for HETI committee, during meetings need to present in front of a crowd Teaching medical students, presenting at grand rounds, presented my research at Alliance NSW Junior Doctor's conference- first prize Results: A lot more confident than before, decided to take on more teaching opportunities 2. Too planned -Always planning ahead -Anticipate problems, say post weekend take, go in really early and read about the patients -while it makes me more efficient, sometimes it used to stress me out and affected my sleep quality -made me realised needs to find a good work-life balance -Patient safety -strategies: doing meditation and yoga, regular exercises -Learnt to keep a good balance CONTINUES...
