ASE A2 Questions and Answers Already Passed What is the purpose of a brake band? It stops and holds the drum that is connected to a member of the planetary gearset. What are brake bands made out of? Brake bands are flexible steel plates lined with friction material. That material can be organic or semi-metallic. What aids in brake band hear dissipation? The friction material absorbs trans fluid. When the brake band tightens around the drum, why doesnt trans fluid get trapped in between the two surfaces? Trans fluid is squeezed out into grooves cut in the lining. What is the benefit of using a softer metal like iron for the drum? The dimpled surface aids in both clamping force and heat dissapation. How can you tell if a drum is made out of harder metal? The surface is usually smooth. What are the benefits of having a double wrapped band? Double wrapped bands have more clamping force and require less hydraulic pressure to produce the same amount of stopping power. What happens as the brake band wears? A gap forms between the band and drum, causing slippage. What controls brake band application? A hydraulically controlled servo. What sets a clutch apart from a brake band? Why are they two separate style components? Brake bands only stop and hold. Clutches stop, hold, and drive. Name three different components that automatic transmissions use to control and lubricate the transmission. Pressure Regulator Valve Governor Valve Throttle Pressure Valve Governor pressure increases with ___________. Vehicle speed. What happens when governor pressure rises? The car will upshift. What happens as throttle pressure rises? The car will downshift. What does the pressure regulator valve control? Mainline pressure. What does throttle pressure indicate? Engine load. What are three way that different vehicles control the throttle valve? Vacuum Modulator Throttle Linkage Electric Solenoid Name three components of a governor valve. Springs Centrifugal Weights Spool Valve What is a spool valve? Spool valves control the direction and flow of fluid or air in a system. How are shift valves controlled on older vehicles? Governor pressure works on one end of the valve. throttle pressure works on the other end. What specifically do shift valves control? Shift valves control reactionary devices such as the clutches and bands that control the planetary gearsets. What is overdrive? When the drive gear is bigger than the driven gear. What are the two purposes of friction material grooves? Heat dissipation and it gives a pathway for trans fluid to escape. How long should friction disks be soaked during transmission cleaning and rebuilding? At least 20 minutes. What is the purpose of the piston in the drum? It applies pressure to the clutch pack and either holds or drives the gear assembly. What is the proper procedure when a sticky/tarnished valve is encountered? Clean it carb clean or similar cleaner and dry it using compressed air or a lint free cloth. How many shift valves does a transmission have? There is one shift valve for every upshift. For example, a 4-speed engine has 3 shift valves. How is transmission hydraulic pressure tested? Most transmissions have test ports on the trans case. What must be functioning correctly before the transmission is checked for problems? The engine must be operating correctly before the transmission can be checked. What are the 3 types of oil pumps that transmissions use? Vane-type Gear-type Rotor-type What happens when the oil filter becomes clogged? The valve body and pump become oil starved because oil is unable to get to where it needs to fast enough. Where is the internal oil filter usually mounted? It is usually mounted to the valve body under the oil pan. Some vehicles have additional oil filters which are kept where? In the trans cooler lines. Where is a transmission range sensor and neutral safety switch usually located? On the transmission case. What are two ways tr sensors are configured electrically? (There may be more ways.) In series with resistors. Parallel circuits. Where are the majority of passages located in the trans? In the valve body. Name two plates that are part of the valve body? Separator Transfer What is the purpose of the transfer and separator plates? They prevent flow into some passages, while allowing it to others. How do separator plates achieve their purpose? They have seats for check balls. Many of these check balls are spring loaded so flow can only go one way.
