What is the semantic triangle? It has three parts: Word;Symbol, Thought or reference, Subject or object. Ex) We see a picture of a dog (Subject/Object), now we understand the word "DOG" (Word/Symbol), then how do we refer to the dog (Cute, cuddly, mean, and/or angry). What are the three different types of messages? Primary- Refers to the intentional contexts, both verbal and non-verbal. Secondary- Refers to the unintentional contexts. Auxiliary- The perception of your message. i.e Voice levels, posture, and facial reactions. What is a residual message It is a message or thought that stays with your audience well after the communication is finished. What are the rules of language? Syntax- How we govern the order of our sentences. Semantic Rule- Governs the meaning of the rules and how we interpret them Contextual Rule- Govern the meaning and word choice according to contexts and social customs. What is the difference between abstract and concrete language? The more abstract your language is the more unclear it will be. The more concrete your language is the more clear and vivid it will be. What is a signpost? Key words that alert an audience to a change of topic. What is the difference between attitude, beliefs, and values? Your attitude is your initial reaction toward a concept or object. Your belief is your ideas based on past experience and may not be based on logic or fact. Your values are core concepts or ideas of what we consider good or bad, right or wrong, or what is worth the sacrifice. What is your self-concept? It contains two main elements: Self-image and Self-Esteem. What is the looking-glass self? It reinforces how we look to others and how they view us, treat us, and interact with us to gain insight on our identity. What is a self-fulfilling prophecy? It is when someone's behavior comes to match and mirror others expectations.
