PMAL103: Turtle Island, Canada, and the World
Unit 1: Thoughts on Indigenous People
Student name: Akshay Harishkumar Jadav
Student ID#: 239412530
1. What do you currently know about Indigenous Peoples as you begin this course?
Ans: In my perspective, the Indigenous people of Canada are the first people of Canada. It is difficult
to define Indigenous knowledge in a single definition because it is different and multifaceted.
(unknown, 2022)Indigenous Information reflects Indigenous People groups' rare societies, dialects,
values, histories, administration, and legitimate frameworks. Indigenous languages contain
knowledge and people know how to tackle their problems such as environment and food. After the
migration of European people to Canada Indigenous people lost their land, culture, and mutual
respect for each other because of the cold war. As they are the first people who came to Canada their
rights, customs, cultures and traditions must be defended.
2. What did you learn from reading First Word by Brian Maracle?
Ans: The story represents the communication between the first indigenous woman and man with
creatures of the earth. In this story, Brian Maracle describes how they tackle with problem. (Maracle,
2005)For instance, in the story they describe medicine to tackle pain, without knowing any chemical
formulas it seems like indigenous people had their own medical system. Moreover, it also reflects the
plants and animals. This story also reflects two twin brothers one was the creator and the other one
was the destroyer. In my perspective, this story is just a myth that does not exist in today's world.
