More single-sex schools in the world.
More than half of the girls in the UK have been subjected to sexual harassment
on school, college, or university grounds. More than 11.000 testimonies from
students of rape, sexual harassment, and assault at school. You do not want
your daughter to be one of the 11.000, do you? In my opinion it is horrible that
it happens a lot. If you get single-sex schools that number will be much lower.
In this paper I will talk about the benefits to attending a single-sex school.
Firstly, even though many boy’s and girls’ schools demonstrate high standards
of education, they often have more relaxed environments than public schools.
When students are with other students that are physically similar to them, they
do not feel as they must proof something to other students. A lot of students at
a public school must dress pretty of look pretty to impress the other students
of the opposite sex. Furthermore, students in single-sex schools are more
willing to take risks when they are not afraid of failing in front of the opposite
sex.
Secondly, in co-ed schools, students speak and behave of the interest of the
other students. In same-sex school students worry less about whether their
behavior is masculine of feminine enough. Teachers in co-ed schools’ tent to
unconsciously and unfairly differentiate between males and females. In same-
sex schools’ teacher cannot do that even if they wanted to. Overall, students in
same-sex schools are less likely to feel pressured to act correctly of their sex in
the eyes of their teachers and peers.
But is it normal to have same-sex school in the twenty-first century? When
students go into a classroom where everyone looks and thinks like they do, the
stereotypes that they believe of the other gender are getting stronger. For
instance, when there is single-gender classrooms, then many of the programs
are based on the stereotypes of boys and girls instead of focusing on their
actual needs. However, in same-sex schools’ boy’s and girls’ can be helped
better. In a girls’ school the teachers can be experts in girls. In a boy’s school
the teachers can be experts in boys. So, the students in the class can help each
other with their issues. To give you an idea, girls who asks each other about
menstruation. Girls will talk about it when they are only with other girls and not
with other boys.
All in all, boy’s and girls’ can be more themselves when they are on same-sex
school. They do not have to proof something to other students. They do not
have to worry about of whether their behavior is masculine of feminine enough.
Even we life in the twenty-first century and it does not seem so normal
anymore, boys and girls can help each other. So, there are a lot of benefits to
get same-sex schools, and then perhaps your daughter won’t be bullied.
