Article Review Introduction
This week’s assignment is about an article review of antibiotic resistance. The research
study topic for review is “isolation and identification of some types of bacteria isolated from
different pathological conditions and study of their resistance to antibiotics” (Al-Fahdawi et al.,
2023). The research study was conducted in Iraq to examine the prevalence of antibiotic
resistance among several strains of bacteria, especially Acinetobacterbaumannii and Klebsiella
pneumonia. Acinetobacterbaumannii and Klebsiella pneumonia are polluted opportunistic gram-
negative bacteria connected to many hospital-acquired infections such as urinary tract infections,
respiratory tract infections, and skin infections. Unfortunately, this bacterial resistance has
become a major worldwide concern in the healthcare system, affecting patients of different ages,
sex, and race. A study in the United States revealed that antibiotic resistance “kills approximately
23,000 patients a year and incurs over $20 billion in additional medical expenses” (Habboush &
Guzman, 2023). According to the research, there are various reasons why bacterial
microorganisms develop resistance to antibiotics, such as overprescription of antibiotics, misuse
of antibiotics, and development of a new microorganism mutation (Al-Fahdawi et al., 2023).
This paper will review a research study on antibiotic resistance, how to prevent further antibiotic
resistance, and how Advance practice nurses can include the lesson learned from this study in
their practice.
Data Collection and Analysis
The research samples were collected from Ramadi Women and Children’s Hospitals and
Ramadi general hospital from October 20, 2021, till January 10, 2022. Samples were collected
from wounds, skin, blood, and respiratory secretions from 170 participants. Of 170 participants,
48.2% were male patients, while 51.8% were female. After 24 hours, the samples were isolated,
