1.3. Several factors have contributed and still contribute to English being the
dominant language in official spaces, briefly mention TWO of these factors. (4
marks)
Two factors that have contributed to English being the dominant language in
official spaces are:
1) Historical colonialism: The expansion of the British Empire and the subsequent
colonization of various regions around the world helped spread the English
language. English became the dominant language in these regions as a result of
colonial rule, and it has continued to be used as a means of communication and
governance even after independence.
2) Economic and technological influence: With the rise of globalization and the
dominance of English-speaking countries in terms of economic power and
technological advancements, English has become the language of international
business, trade, and communication. The spread of English through the internet and
the influence of English-speaking media and entertainment industries have further
solidified its status as a dominant language in official spaces.
