for you to know and understand to be able to teach English effectively. Two of
these concepts are mentioned below. In your own words, define these

1.1 Critical literacy (3 marks)
Critical literacy: Critical literacy refers to the ability to actively and critically analyze
texts and media by questioning the underlying assumptions, biases, and power
dynamics within them. It involves understanding the different perspectives and
motivations behind the creation of texts and being able to interpret and evaluate
, them in a discerning manner.
1.2 Cohesion (3 marks)
Cohesion: Cohesion refers to the way in which different parts of a text are connected
and organized to create a coherent and logical flow. It involves the use of linguistic
and structural devices such as pronouns, conjunctions, and transitional phrases to
link ideas and provide smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
1.3. Several factors have contributed and still contribute to English being the
dominant language in official spaces, briefly mention TWO of these factors. (4
marks)
Two factors that have contributed to English being the dominant language in
official spaces are:
1) Historical colonialism: The expansion of the British Empire and the subsequent
colonization of various regions around the world helped spread the English
language. English became the dominant language in these regions as a result of
colonial rule, and it has continued to be used as a means of communication and
governance even after independence.
2) Economic and technological influence: With the rise of globalization and the
dominance of English-speaking countries in terms of economic power and
technological advancements, English has become the language of international
business, trade, and communication. The spread of English through the internet and
the influence of English-speaking media and entertainment industries have further
solidified its status as a dominant language in official spaces.
