CD005: Observing, Documenting and Assessing

Part I: Case Study #1

Firstly, observation is an important teaching resource. Observations in early

childhood are done by observing their actions and listening. It allows educators the ability

to get to know their students and make decisions on how and what to teach each child.

Observation also allows educators the capability to learn a lot about their personalities,

what skills the children need to practice, their interest and the ability to properly assess

their developmental levels. Most importantly observations permit educators the ability

to enhance their effectiveness as teachers.

Secondly, Angelica the 9-month-old at play is an example of child being observed

through her actions. In the video Angelica is playing, crawling and pulling herself up. She

can be observed looking at herself in the mirror and grabbing and reaching for stuffed

animals. According to the developmental milestone she is within the normal physical,

cognitive and socio-emotional range for a child between 6 to 9 months of age. (CDC,

2009) Also, this is evident through observation because she can be seen interacting with

herself, making sounds to show she is happy and using her fingers to point at objects.

Also, Angelica’s actions are a clear indication of her development.

Thirdly, the observation method used to evaluate Angelica is the systematic observation

method. This is a commonly used method for preschoolers because this generally occurs

in a natural setting such as a classroom. In fact, systematic observation of a child’s

behavior during play makes it possible to obtain, explain, describe and understand

, fundamental aspects of child’s development and learning. (Escolano-Perez et al, 2017)

Systematic observation is a valid way of obtain information objectively.

Part II: Case Study #2

Fourthly, Nathan is a 4-year old preschooler. He is being observed by his teacher Ms.

Ford who has provided several documents pertaining to Nathan’s physical, cognitive and

socio-emotional development. The first document under review is the quarterly

assessment. It describes her observation on how Nathan expresses himself verbally,

follow instructions, interest, physical skills and how he plays well with others. His result

for the most part shows that he is meeting these marks averagely.

Also, Nathan scores a high marks on showing interest on learning new topics, because he

appears to be very engaged and talkative during that time. However, appears to be shy

and tends to stay quiet at times. His behavior hinders his participation in certain activities

and interaction with other children. To further address concerns the director holds an

interview with Nathan’s mother to discuss the initial observation as well as any concerns

or observations she may have as his parent. During this interview both parties found a

correlation in Nathan’s shyness behavior. Both parties agreed to continually work jointly

on his learning and building his confidence in school.

Furthermore, Nathan’s drawing shows a depiction of two stick figures holding hands.

He tells his teacher that the picture is of him and his mom and they are at the aquarium.

The other object in the drawing appears to be fish that he is showing to his mother.

Nathan further writes his name at the bottom of the picture as he looks at an alphabet

chart. Drawing is an important aspect of child development because it promotes visual,

motor, and social development. It helps develop creativity and reading. Systematically
