Work Experience Assignment 2

Task 1- Circle time
What skills, behaviours and attributes did I demonstrate while carrying out this task?
Working as part of a team
This was an important aspect of this task as it involved a lot of communication between colleagues in
order to be able to deliver an effective and educational circle time session that would benefit the
children. We have to understand between us who is going to be leading the session, what songs well
sing and what we are going to be doing in terms on whether we are reading a story or whether we do a
playful activity. Therefore, this prevents a lot of potential confusion and allows circle time to be
successful. I sometimes have to adapt communication methods such as using sign language, so I often
turn to my colleagues for help and support with this as even though I have some basic sign language
skills, I’m not always able to sign all the words needed to during circle time. There is lots of evidence that
suggests why working as part of a team in so important in health and social care settings and one of the
ways comes from the website (Work - Chron.com, 2012) who suggests When health care providers
collaborate, patients are better satisfied with their care. When members of the health care team carry
out their responsibilities and know that their counterparts are working toward a common objective,
the health care team and the patients are less stressed. There is less uncertainty regarding patients'
treatment regimens when team members' duties are explicit. Simultaneously, when there is effective
communication within the team, patients have a better understanding of their therapy and expected
outcome. Therefore, although this evidence specifically ties to healthcare professions, it is still just as
important in the nursery and during circle time specifically as it helps me and others understand our
tasks we are each going to participate in and therefore ensure that it is a smooth flowing activity.
Supportive
Being supportive is another key aspect of circle time as some children pick up things later than others
which can often be discouraging for them. Therefore, it is important to be motivating for them, stay
patient and try and help them in any way you can and tell them they are doing a good job as this will
hopefully allow them to feel more confident in their own abilities and improve their performance during
the activity. A lot of children also sometimes choose not to join in with some of the activities as the don’t
have a very long attention span. As a result, it is important that during this time I help and encourage
them to join in for example during the nursery rhymes I will do the actions and sing along myself, so they
hopefully feel the need to reciprocate. Support in a nursery setting is vital as children often need a boost
of confidence in order to perform to the best of their ability. Evidence that suggests why it is so
important in health and social care settings comes from (Care Health Jobs, 2021) Healthcare support
employees play an important part in delivering excellent care to patients in all settings. They can help
patients with a variety of tasks, including social and physical activity, personal care, mobility, meal
preparation, and appointment scheduling. Therefore, this emphasises its importance and will have a
huge advantage on my
Confidence
It is really important that I have some level of confidence when performing this task as you need to be a
role model for the children and set a good example. Having a sense of leadership can only be
emphasised when you have a sense of confidence. Therefore, it is a vital aspect of circle time. Being
confident helps with all the other areas of skill as it helps develop your communication, allows you to ask
questions about how to improve and therefore improves your performance in the role as a whole.
Evidence that suggests why confidence is so important in healthcare settings comes from (BikeHike,
2021) One of the most important personal factors influencing clinical decision making is confidence,
because if a clinician believes that he or she has the skills to assess a patient's concerns and that the
, outcome of that assessment will lead to an improved quality of life for the patient then this will boost
self-esteem for the service provider but also the trust the patient has in you. Therefore, the same rule
applies in every health and social care setting including the nursery as having confidence will mean that
the children will enjoy their time with me and will make my placement supervisor feel as if they have
taught me one of the key roles of being a nursery practitioner. This is a huge advantage on my
performance.
What feedback did I receive?
I was told that my confidence was growing by the week in terms of my attitude during circle time however,
some of my skills require some minor improvements such as mirroring good practice of other staff, using my
own initiative, being more alert, focussed, and vigilant, acting promptly to actions and better enthusiasm
and motivation. All of these skills are vital when it comes to working as a part of a team and the website
youthemployment.org (nd) said that if you have good people skills you’ll make a good team player, and
skills like communication and having a positive attitude make a team great. Therefore, in order to improve
my behaviour during circle time, I should work on my confidence and trust my own initiative more, so I am
able to contribute further. My work placement supervisor said that “I need to get more involved”, she also
said that this will help “contribute to my confidence” and furthermore, expand my knowledge within the
field of work in which I complete my placement. Overall, I think that I received overall good feedback which
will help me improve the way in which I complete circle time each placement day.
What went well?
I was to be able to distinguish the different barriers associated between communicating with adults and
communicating with children during circle time, i.e., when speaking to children you must speak in a calm
voice, not use any bad language, and try to empower them the best you can. When speaking to colleagues
you must speak still in a calm tone, but not in a patronising way like you would with the children, you must
maintain a professional standard and bad language, although more accepted among adults, should still not
be used due to this professional environment where there are both parties associated with the activity.
Circle time also involves collective decision making based on needs and good communication skills. As a
result, I believe I met this objective well as I spoke to the children and adults differently, fulfilling the needs
of both and also used sign language. I ensured that I remained professional throughout, by conforming to
my role as a supportive individual who encouraged and excited the children. I treated the children and my
colleagues with respect and dignity and encouraged them to participate at every given opportunity.
Consequently, I believe I was able to work as part of a team quite well despite some improvements that I
need to make in order to benefit my skills and attributes further. The evidence that supports the importance
of remaining professional and respectful within a health and social care setting comes from the website
Rehabilitation Robotics (Smith, 2021) which says that professionalism promotes safety among individuals
and health care is transported by teams of professionals who need to communicate well, respecting the
principles of honesty, respect for others, privacy, and accountability for their actions. In every health care
setting, having a professional attitude is absolutely pivotal as it is what gives people their first impression of
you as a person. An individual with a professional attitude is more likely to me liked by others compared to
people who have a much more laid back, care-free attitude. My placement told me I did keep a professional
attitude during my time there, proving my commitment to the role and my respect for others.
Which factors may have influenced my performance?
My confidence was something that I was told I needed to work on as social anxiety was something that I
have always struggled with. Since starting placement, I have begun to feel much more confident and relaxed
around my colleagues and in the environment which I think is going to improve my performance during
circle time as I continue to attend. I believe my organisational skills are good, and this will influence my
, performance as it minimises confusion due to the fact you know what role you are playing during the
activity. For example, one day I may be assigned to lead circle time and having good organisational skills
means I will always be on top of the schedule. From doing health and social care for a long time now, I have
some advanced knowledge and skills of being able to work in the health and social care sector and working
as part of a team forms a major part of this. Therefore, from this I am always clearly aware of my
responsibilities as a team player, and this will contribute to my performance and ensure that I am fully able
to adapt to my role. The evidence that supports why it is so important to work as part of a team comes from
the Crohn website (Nd) which states that team work is a prime way of delivering exemplary health care.
There are many benefits that are provided to individuals who receive effective and efficient health care
and safety issues are reduced as well as your environment becoming more enjoyable. Better
communication is also formed as well as better care in general. In terms of my own personal development,
working as part of a team has made sure that I develop my own communication skills making it easier for me
to converse with both the adults and children and develop my interpersonal skills for the future.
Organisational skills are highly important when it comes to working as part of a team as well as there is a
large amount of evidence that proves this. For example, (Reddy, 2017) says that organisational skills means
that you can be successful in any work, and it is necessary for an individual to know how to meet targets,
to work independently, to prioritize and plan for the future. Therefore, it is clear how important it is as it
emphasises how it will make it easier for you and your team to understand how to properly work as part of a
team, and what tasks you are each doing which avoids any confusion. During my time at placement, it was
said that I could have improved my organisational skills and therefore, understanding this will help me
develop further.
How can I improve?
If I was to do the task again, I would ask my supervisor to tell me how she wants me to improve in terms of
my skills and attribute. After this, I would complete this task again and then ask my supervisor if I have
improved. Asking questions in the first place to my supervisor will improve my role as a team player as it will
make it clear that I am willing to learn and improve my performance during circle time. If I am able to
become the best in the role as I possibly can be, this will be helpful in terms of achieving my ultimate goal of
becoming a midwife as this is a key responsibility in that specific job role as it will benefit my performance.
Asking questions is so important in health and social care and in every workplace really as evidence provided
by (WarrenBergerAuthor, 2018) suggests it allows you to improve your performance at work. It's vital to
continuously enquiring about the changing nature of your work, especially in today's fast-paced and
rapidly changing workplace.
Observed improvements:
I asked my placement supervisor to watch me doing this task again during my placement days so she could
see if I had made any improvements. After a few more placement days she said that my confidence had
grown massively, and she felt like I was able to hold a conversation with both the children and colleagues
without any support. She said that I seemed much more ‘relaxed’ in my environment which is key of you
want to perform well in the setting.
