1 GETTING STARTED
Welcome to the module Introduction to Human Resource Development (HRD1501). We trust that you
will have a stimulating and successful year of study. South Africa is currently experiencing tremendous
change in the areas of training and development. Over the past few years, government has promulgated
numerous education and training-related laws and regulations. We trust that you will find the contents
of this module stimulating and of practical value. We recommend that you begin with your studies as
soon as possible, as this module is both intensive and comprehensive.
It is important that you read this tutorial letter thoroughly, keep it in a safe place and then log onto the
myUnisa site for this module. Over and above the inventory letter and other items, you should also have
access via myUnisa to the brochure Study @ Unisa, which contains important information. This brochure
is also available on myUnisa. The Department of Despatch should supply you with the following tutorial

2 OVERVIEW OF HRD1501
2.1 Purpose
The purpose of this module is to familiarise you with the foundational concepts applicable to the training
and development of staff in organisations within the context of South Africa’s legislative environment.
This module is delivered through myUnisa and the internet, as well as peer group interaction.
Community engagement is also included in some of the activities. Lecturers will interact with students
on myUnisa and via e-mail.
2.2 Outcomes
The module outcomes are those outcomes that you must achieve in order to complete the module
successfully and be effective in the workplace. You need to achieve the following broad outcomes for
this module:
Explain the role and function of human resource development in the organisation.
Explain the implications of relevant training legislation for human resource development at
organisational level.

, Describe the relevant training and development structures and mechanisms created by the
training legislation.
Define relevant training concepts and terminology.
Discuss the principles of learning and learning theories, and indicate how the principles should be
applied in the design and delivery of learning programmes.
Explain why and how adult learning principles should be utilised in the design and delivery of
learning programmes.
Discuss the purpose of the training cycle.
Recognise the administrative duties performed in the human resource development function.
Discuss the purpose of record-keeping in training.
Analyse the training facilities involved in training.
Identify and critically analyse the different training rooms available for training to take place.
Discuss the process of planning and selecting an appropriate venue for training.
Make suggestions, based on sound reasons, for using the various training venues.
Indicate the administration aspects that must be considered when conducting training.

4 MYUNISA AND MYLIFE E-MAIL
If you have access to a computer that is linked to the internet, you can quickly access resources and
information from the university. The myUnisa learning management system is the university's online
campus that will help you communicate with your lecturers, with other students and with the
administrative departments at Unisa – all through the computer and the internet.
You can start at the main Unisa website at http://www.unisa.ac.za and then click on the myUnisa orange
block. This will take you to the myUnisa website. To go to the myUnisa website directly, go to
https://my.unisa.ac.za. Click on the Claim UNISA Login on the right-hand side of the screen on the
myUnisa website. You will then be prompted to give your student number in order to claim your initial
myUnisa details as well as your myLife e-mail login details.
Remember, there are a variety of tools available on the main myUnisa site you can access even before
you log onto the site. For the HRD1501 myUnisa module site, we have also included a URL (or link to a
website) about etiquette and mutual expectations in the preface to the study guide. Check your myLife
e-mails regularly because all announcements and other module-related communication will be
sent to this address.
