Réponse: Jane confronts Mrs Reed, she is upfront, blunt and brave to defend her rights. Mrs Reed neglects Jane because she is poor however Jane rejects this and stands up for herself.

Réponse: Exclamation shows and accusatory tone, Jane is honest, the adjective “deceitful” expresses anger and hurt. Mrs Reed is outwardly nice but secretly cruel and corrupt.

Réponse: Jane is passionate and feels a sense of freedom and victory as she defies her aunt. Her emotions are out of control and wild depicting her slight immaturity

“I desired liberty, for liberty i gasped; for liberty i uttered a prayer.”
Réponse: The power of 3 suggests she Jane feels trapped and is wrestling to get free. The quote emphasises he desperation for freedom and presents her strength of mind as she is unwilling to be restricted any longer in lowood.

“Tenderly than i had ever been raised or upheld before.”
Réponse: Bessie’s love for Jane is her first experience of kindness and a maternal figure. This emphasises a small moment of comfort she gains in an otherwise neglectful childhood.

MR ROCHESTER: COLD
“He went on as a statue would, that is he neither spoke nor moved”
This is a simile suggesting Mr Rochester is cold and distant, his
emotions are often hard to read and can be seen as aloof and stony.
He seems inhumane and unfriendly towards Jane
This description could be a representation of his rugged appearance
and social importance
“eyes that I saw were dark, irate and piercing”
The power of three makes his face seem overwhelming and
daunting
The dark connotations could foreshadow his ominous and gloomy
past which Jane later finds out about
Brontë describes Jane observing his eyes to symbolise her being
able to look deeply into his souls and see the truth behind it – Jane is
not scared by this.
“I am used to saying “Do this.” And it is done”
Rochester uses a commanding and authoritative tone and seems
unfeeling.
He lacks emotion and is very blunt when addressing people
He is clearly I afraid of hurting Jane feelings by speaking to her in his
usual manner.
“A quaint inexperienced girl like you”
Rochester addresses Jane as “girl” which seems insulting and
degrading
He sees Jane as weak and inferior at first glance as in this time
period women were seen as meek and mild compared to men.
He is introduced as a cruel and disrespectful character who Jane is
not afraid of speaking her mind to.
