C1: Description
Mrs. Elizabeth Enk was my choice for this interview. She has been teaching for 17 years, obtained her
Bachelors in Sociology for Canisius University in Buffalo, NY, and received her Master's in Special
Education Cross Categorical from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. Her first 8 years of teaching was
performed in a self-contained classroom, in which many, if not all her students were under the IDEA
categories of Autism, SLP (Specific Learning Disability) in all core academic areas ELA (English Language
Arts) and Math and exhibited mild to moderate cognitive intellectual disabilities. The last 9 years she has
taught in a self-contained setng in which her students have had severe and profound disabilities. She has
worked in only two school districts in Arizona; 14 years with Glendale Union High School District in
Glendale, AZ and 3 Years in the Dysart Unified School District in Surprise, AZ.
When planning instruction, Mrs. Enk utilizes Arizona state standards and content connectors in her lesson
plan development and assessments to meet the state and national standards. She does not post her
content standards, instead, she communicates with her students at the beginning of a lesson what the
goal or learning objectives for the lesson. Mrs. Enk chose this method of communication because her students
are in a specialized program for severe and profound learners.
Some of the internal influences that Mrs. Enk and I discussed that impacts education on her campus is
the need of daily paraprofessional support and the time it takes to communicate needs, wants, and
student academic success across the department. More internal influences that impact education at her
school is the time needed within the school day to have breaks for students and staff such as lunch
breaks, bathroom breaks, and mental breaks. Mrs. Enk voiced that most of the greatest influential factors
would be those relating to how high the students function intellectually and quite simply what they are
interested in along with how they communicate their needs and how they respond to those the options
available for them.
Some external influences Mrs. Enk proposed that impact education in her district are IEP (Individualized
Education Program) development and the requirements set forth for graduation and grading. Along with
community outing resources, funding for items in the classroom such as food, materials, manipulatives, and
other items that are unique to the ASPIRE Special Education students and not all classes. She stated
