Thematic Unit
Thematic unit is different ways to make certain lessons and different activities with a
theme one. For instance, a thematic unit will take the theme “Insects” and make it a complete
lesson based on all different activities. Emergent curriculum is great when it comes to learning
how to really implement thematic curriculum. Emergent Curriculum is where the curriculum is
based off of the topics the children are interested in. So if a child wants to learn about dinosaurs,
the curriculum is based off of that theme. Thematic’s is really based off of book material and is
not a hands on approach for children. I am a strong believer that children learn through play, so
to me Emergent Curriculum would be more effective. It is most effective to me because children
are taught to explore and manipulate objects in order for them to learn. I really think it is
important for them to fully understand what they are learning, and Emergent Curriculum keeps
them interested in what they want to learn.
Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners
The most challenging piece of bringing developmental milestones into the curriculum
would be just the different learning levels of the children, especially as the curriculum goes more
in depth and get a little more challenging. Students tend to start falling behind if they do not
understand what a certain topic is. So for instance, shapes and colors is a theme for one of our
monthly curriculums. When the students are all done with the theme, we then do a small
evaluation on how many shapes they know, and what colors they know as well. We never tell
them they are wrong, we just point to a shape, and mark down their answers. This will help us as
teachers to know who still needs a little more help, verse who doesn't. We then put this
evaluation in their portfolio for the years to come.
, There are quite a few ways that developmental knowledge can be used to create
curriculum in a way that meets the needs of diverse learners. For a lot of cases, its either students
who are not developmentally there, or there are learners who get bored because they already
know the material. Our text book states that
"In developmentally appropriate classrooms, teachers typically provide for play with designated
activity or learning centers, materials that support development in many different ways, and large
blocks of time that allow children to engage deeply in various activities." Teachers should know
that there needs to be lessons for children who are really struggling, or for students that surpass
what is being taught. It is only fair to differentiate on both ends, because if not someone will still
end up falling behind.
Sharing with Families and Children
The importance for collaboration with families in regards to curriculum would be so that
the parents are constantly aware of what is going on in the classroom. Without the parents
knowledge of what the children have learned, there will be no school/home based discussion
between the families. In the article Getting Smart, the author states “The more connected parents
feel to the teacher and school, the more likely they are to actively engage in learning with their
children.” One of the easiest ways to get children comfortable in school is for their parents to
acknowledge and talk with the children about what was learned.
Implementing the Thematic Unit
The curriculum that I plan on using is Emergent Curriculum. I have always loved this
curriculum for this age group. Bright Horizons in their Emergent learning passage states
