1 – HISTORY OF THE EU

3 Emilie Dimitriou en Alexander Van Cauwelaert

, On the second picture we can see that Algeria is colored blue, although they aren’t a part of Europe now they

were back in 1957. The reason behind that is because they were a French colony. Once Algeria became
independent it left. There is also another region that isn’t part of Europe but of Northern America, Greenland. It
belongs to Denmark, but left the European Union in 1986 because they didn’t approve of the fishing quota’s.

Languages spoken in the EU:

English Dutch French German Spanish Italian

Greek Estonian Latvian Maltese Slovak Slovenian

Czech Bulgarian Hungarian Polish Croatian Swedish

Danish Finnish Irish Lithuanian Portuguese Romanian

THE 50’S AND 60’S

1952 – European Coal and Steel Community: ECSC

In 1952 and 1958 the 6 founding states came together to facilitate the in- and exportation of their goods. The
founding states are: France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and Netherlands. For the first time, these
states made an organ that is above sovereign states = Supranational. This means that the organ makes
decisions for itself and doesn’t have to take into ‘consideration’ the sovereignty of the countries. This means
that if they pass a law or resolution, it is binding and not only a recommendation.

 The organ has legislative power.

1958 – European Economic Community: EEC

European Atomic Energy Community: Euratom

1967 – Single Council and Single Commission

1968 – The Custom Union (abolishing all customs between the member states, introducing the common
customs tariff)
