Exam: review of an academic paper
Theoretical part of a paper- article non-for-profit
o Indicate 3 good things about it
Abstract includes methodology, introduction is short.
Written in an understandable academic language, a lot of
abbreviations but were explained.
Good structure, the literature has a clearly defined framework
The choice of a case study seems adequate: inductive
They tried to used triangulation by using multiple methods “our
multiple methods approach” …
o Indicate 3 bad things about it
Research question wasn’t clear, you couldn’t understand the goal of
the study
Discussion was too short
Methodology wasn’t so clear
Tables weren’t good explained, figures also not explained in
detailed.
It didn’t end with propositions even thought it was supposed to be
theory building, because they say “we put forward the SLCO
framework” …
o What can be adjusted to improve the quality?
The conclusion was too short, they didn’t explain what their
contribution to the field was, not broad enough.
Conclusion: is not ready to be send to a journal.
Validity by using more triangulation, reliability by leaving an audit
trail and by bringing forward the theoretical sophistication on the
conclusions.

Qualitative
Cools et al. (2008)
o Research question?
What is the impact of the steps taken to comply with international transfer pricing
regulations on the design and use of the MCS in an MNE using one set of transfer
prices? -> found in the introduction.
o Type of qualitative study?
O (descriptive, theory building, theory testing)
Case Study: Descriptive and Theory building, it is theory building in the
sense that they added to the literature by ending with very clear
propositions.
o Approach–Method?
Single case study with chosen method in-depth case study by interviews
and company documents.
They use different source of data, and this enhances the validity by
triangulating the data sources: “the data are partly historical, party
longitudinal”.
