Tech and Tac Assignment 2

Methods used to measure Tec and Tac Performances
Video Analysis – Video analysis is key for measuring performances as it allows an in-depth
investigation to each play occurring. This will mean more athletes can identify what went right and
wrong with specific plays they want to understand. For example, if a team was to misplay a key
moment of possession and they are not 100% sure with what went wrong. They can then look back
onto that specific play directly and measure up the rights and wrong which occurred with the team
to be able to advance on this and perform better.
Protocol - The investigator will gather the information (this can be any method). Such as setting up
their own cameras and recording the game. Or getting someone else’s camera footage and using
that. After gathering the footage, they would set up the display to their own accord and show the
individual(s) while speaking logically and as a team to understand and develop on plays.

Tally Charts – Tally charts are an easy way to gather statistical amounts of data efficiently. Filling out
a chart and simply jotting down a line is far more efficient then writing words to gather data. This will
normally be used for acts such as a foul or field goals. Officials can clearly see when, for instance a
basketball player has been fouled out. They simply tally the fouls and at the specific amount
accumulated the player will get ejected.
Protocol – To use tally charts the protocol will be to gather a piece of paper with subjected columns
signifying specific data types. Then when a specific data type (like a foul) occurs someone will simply
jot a line down or tally up the results by adding 1.

Notational Analysis – Used by coaches and sports scientists to obtain data which can be objective to
a specific performance of athletes. Technical and tactical, individual athlete movement and work-
rate can all be studied. This will result in enabling coaches and athletes to find out more about their
performance and allow a competitive advantage.
Protocol – Making notes at the live event and expanding it to best suit the athletes for development
advantages. For example, watching a live game and making notes on key points which have occurred
for what was done well and poorly. In order to develop a team or athletes’ performance.

Reliability, Validity, Accuracy and Usability of each method
Video Analysis – The reliability of identifying the situation is very strong. Cameras won’t lie and so
therefore to view where the negative occurred is very reliable. This however wont correlate to the
specifics of the play for the accuracy. I believe this as most cameras won’t be picking up the sound of
what is happening of the players vision of the game. To say for instance an athlete in basketball was
to cause a turnover from a bad pass, we can see this happen from a clear and unpressured view. The
player might have had a teammate call for the pass which he complied with, or the vision of the
athlete was blocked from the negative of the attempt. Therefore, the accuracy and validity is not as
sustainable. The usability of the method is very strong everyone now has the technology to record a
game and go back and view plays. This can be though phones and other forms.

Tally Charts – Reliability of tally charts are very subjective to the observer. Some observers may be
stronger at collecting the data then others as some may get distracted and end up tallying the wrong
results to what occurred. Therefore, the reliability will be based on the observer. Validity and
accuracy of the results is strong, when viewing the tallied results, the data is very easy to look at and

, identify therefore not leading to misguided information. The data is easy to track and does not take
a large amount of skill, mainly awareness. Usability is very strong as anyone can do this. The objects
needed are not costly and don’t involve any technology in most cases. Therefore, it is very common
and efficiently used in sports for all stages of performance.

Notational Analysis – The reliability is very much like the video analysis as it has its strengths as to
where it can be proven with visual evidence. However, it also has its negatives as it does not
describe the performers experience as well and can be misled. The validity and accuracy of the
notational analysis is subjective to the researcher. Some live notations may be rushed and not be as
conclusive as written. However, the feedback through in-depth analysis from looking back on old
games is stronger and more accurate and valid this is as it involves more time to have a result. The
usability of this is much less accurate.

Strengths and Weaknesses – Each Method
Video Analysis – The strengths are that the method is very easily manifested. Most people have a
phone or another form of recording devise. This makes it very accountable for the vast sporting
participants. The video analysis also offers a wide scale breakdown to past plays dimensionally with
means to develop progression for a team or player. This means having many variables that can be
viewed for specific area progression. For example, they can monitor the exact second of an athlete’s
reaction time (variable of time management). Then another variable could be team spacing. Such as
viewing where each individual player is standing at any given time to attempt adaptions and theory
of more beneficial placements. The negatives of video analysis are the cost of some higher forms of
technology. To have the best equipment it will cost a larger sum of money which is a barrier to
majority individuals. The next form of negative with video analysis would be the privacy policy of
recording individuals and posting clips. It can lead to legal action and can be seen as violating privacy
in some cases.

Tally Charts – The main strengths of tally charts are that it is very easily constructed. Sports teams
and coaches when wanting to gather information of athletes can simply manifest a tally chart which
allows help with data analysis for future improvement. For example, when a game situation is
occurring all is needed is a pen and paper to tally charts through observation. This demonstrates the
strength of ease in tally charts. Another strength is that the data can be easily visualised in showing
where a player need to develop their stats. An example being, if a player shows they are making a
low amount of 3 points with the attempts to makes then this can be easily viewed, and they will
know this is a problem to develop. The weaknesses of the tally charts would be the easily
manipulated stats that don’t show full coverage. For example, the tally charts of an athlete’s field
goal will not show the spacing and pressure they have created for others. A player can be a strong
part of the team without being the most dominant scorer. Therefore, the tally charts don’t convey
the full acknowledgement of an athlete’s performance. Another weakness would be the fact it is not
strongly detailed. This means that, it will not show specifics and can lead to misguided statistics.

Notational Analysis – The main strengths are the detail in which this shows. It brings an outsider’s
point of view and in-depth analysis which can be used to enhance performance. The athletes can
view which scenarios they need to think about more and why. It can also be used for psychological
demands of sport and help teams, individuals and coaches to make comparative identifications to
the athletes’ performances from before and after. The weaknesses are that the analysis can be very
time consuming and can take a longer time to make a reliable analysis. Another weakness would be
the complexity of the task. To make sure the data is strongly done it would have to be done by a
professional which knows their craft very well or the data can be misled and inaccurate.
