, In 2020 when Covid-19 hit, my children expressed that they really wanted me to stop
smoking cigarettes. I had been a cigarette smoker for about fifteen years. They would constantly
tell me how much they did not like that I smoked and how embarrassing it was for them when
their friends came over. They would say that they get questioned at school because sometimes
they smell like smoke. They would also tell me that they did not want me to get cancer and die,
like my father had done when I was twenty. My father passed away from lung cancer when I was
twenty years old and that though got me to thinking about my own health. Since we all were
forced home together due to Covid, and thinking about my longevity, I decided that they had
persuaded me enough and that I would quit smoking. Due to lots of hard work, I had quit
smoking cigarettes in May of 2020 and my children were ecstatic. Due to the constant persuasion
of my children, I had quit smoking and was feeling great about myself.
Being that the Evaluation Likelihood Model is “a dual-processing model that highlights
the processes by which persuasion occurs. It stipulates that there are two distinct ways people
process communications: the central and peripheral routes, with the route differing in the
likelihood people will elaborate on the message” (Perloff, 2021). Using this model,
communication is processed two different ways. The central route involves processing
information by carefully evaluating the arguments presented and concluding what the persuader
thought without them fully disclosing all their ideas and merging these indicators with your own
knowledge, values, and biases (Perloff, 2021). The peripheral route involves examining the
message that the persuader is sending quickly and focusing’s on simple cues to help you decide
whether to accept what they are saying (Perloff, 2021). When the likelihood is low that someone
will think about or mentally modify arguments in communication then the persuasion occurs
through the peripheral route (Perloff, 2021). On the other hand, when the likelihood is high that
