European Societies: concepts and termsTreaty of Paris Six neighboring countries agreed in the Treaty
of Paris to form an area of free trade for several
key resources including coal, steel and iron ore.
The European Coal and Steel community
involved Germany, Belgium, France,
Netherlands, Italy and Luxembourg.
Treaty of Rome The treaty of Rome created two new bodies:
the European Atomic Energy Community
(Euratom) and the European Economic
Community (EEC). The EEC created a common
market among the member nations, with no
tariffs to the flow of labour and goods. Social
goals were only there as a derivative of
economic goals (the common market), there
was social subsidiarity in the treaty of Rome.
For example: free movement of workers came
with coordination of social security systems and
the prevention of unfair comparative advantage
came with the principle of non-discrimination.
Another example is the European social fund.
The Ohlin report The Ohlin report provided the intellectual basis
for the Treaty of Rome.
Single European Act The Single European Act established the
single/common market, it formalized political
cooperation within the EEC. The single/common
market seeks to guarantee free movement of
people, capital, goods and labour (the four
freedoms) within the European Union.
Treaty of Maastricht The Treaty on the European Union, also called
the Treaty of Maastricht, changed the EEC into
the newly named European Union. There was
also an agreement on currency union.
Eurozone The Eurozone is a restricted ‘club’ of countries
that are part of the Euro. Not all countries
belonging to the single market also belong to
the euro area.
Schengen agreement The Schengen agreement is a treaty that led
most of the European countries towards
abolishment of their national borders, to build a
Europe without borders known as the
“Schengen area”. The agreement remains one
of the world’s biggest areas that have ended
border control between member countries. It
allows people to travel without having their
passports checked at the borders.
