This portfolio is a report on the business of Lancet Group of Laboratories in Zimbabwe.
The company originates from South Africa, and is currently operating in Zimbabwe
among many other African countries. The report shows that the company has
expanded into many countries initially through exportation of products and services
and later using vertical foreign direct investment. The company is listed on Zimbabwe
stock exchange and competes in the medical industry. The company has a success
story in the country, although many of its competitors have failed. There are various
factors behind the success of Lancet group that were appraised in this research. The
business will be interchangeably termed Lancet, Lancet Group or Lancet laboratories.
Literature search
This research is a result of desk study where the researcher utilised various secondary
sources. The sources used in this research were mainly sourced online. The
researcher used different browsers although google chrome is the most used one.
Online databases such as google scholar were used to get most of the sources as well
as some various newspapers and of course information from those with first-hand
information about the countries and the company. The search keywords used include
Lancet, medical industry, institutions and international business among others. In the
literature search, a number of sources were consulted that exceed 25, although on 12
were consulted as featured in the list of references.
Background
The Lancet Group of Laboratories is a private pathology service founded and based
in Johannesburg, South Africa. The group has over 100 reference laboratories and
more than 250 branches in different African countries

pathology services. From its South African foundation, the company is present in
Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda,
Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The tests provided include PCR and genetic tests for cancers
and infectious diseases, histopathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry,

testing for tuberculosis, microbiology, endocrinology, clinical chemistry, blood clotting,
haematology, toxicology and tests relating to occupations.
The company has grown and made significant footprint in the East Africa, where its
laboratories include Pathologists Lancet Kenya Limited, that it established in 2009, as
well as Lancet Laboratories Uganda Limited and Lancet Laboratories Tanzania
Limited. The continental footprint of the company expands to the West Africa where
Lancet Laboratories is one of the leading pathology laboratories operating in the
region, providing vital diagnostic and monitoring pathology services.
Zimbabwean division is one of the company’s crucial branches within its ecosystem.
The company operates in the country’s private healthcare environment and provide
specialised pathology services for the corporate, insurance and industrial sectors.
There is high demand for private health care services in Zimbabwe owing to the
dilapidated public health care services in the country. The company competes with
various private laboratories in the country, although it has remained the most
