Background: The importance of interprofessional collaboration in healthcare is widely
recognized. Nurses play a significant role in this collaboration and this requires leadership
competencies to effectively fulfill this role. However, little is known about the specific
leadership competencies that nurses need in interprofessional collaboration within hospital
settings.
Method: A qualitative systematic review was conducted to investigate the literature focusing
on the leadership competencies of nurses in interprofessional collaboration. Databases such as
PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched for relevant articles. In total, 11
studies were included and analyzed. With thematic extraction the data synthesis is completed
after this an inductive approach is conducted. A leadership model is used to classify the
competence.
Results: The results revealed that there are nine leadership competencies that are crucial for
nurses in interprofessional collaboration. These competencies include connecting, role
understanding, effective communication, role modeling, acting as a coach, advocating for
patients, putting the patient at the center, creating a healthy work climate and being a nurse
expert. Moreover, the review indicated that developing these competencies can lead to better
interprofessional collaboration and improved quality of care.
Conclusion: The findings of this systematic review emphasize the importance of recognizing
the leadership competencies of nurses in interprofessional collaboration. Identifying the
specific competencies needed for this role can contribute to developing effective
interprofessional collaboration programs and improving the quality of care. Further qualitative
research is needed to identify suitable frameworks and programs that encompass these
competencies, as well to test and evaluate these competencies in practice and assess their
impact on healthcare outcomes.
Implication for clinical practice: The identification of specific leadership competencies
required for effective collaboration can create alertness for nurses and nursing leaders. It can
help nursing schools and training institutions to incorporate these competencies into their
curriculum. Also, these outcomes can inform training programs for current nurses to enhance
their leadership competence. Additionally, nursing managers can use these findings to recruit
and select team members who possess the necessary competencies for specific roles and tasks
within healthcare teams.
