Telogical argThe teleological argument bases its reasoning on evidence from the
existent and contingent universe, implying that the universe shows both
order and regularity, as well as purpose towards a goal (telos). We need
an explanation for the universe's visible order and purpose that involves
a directing intellect. Thus there must be a designer for a created
universe, and that designer is God.
Aquinas' fifth way - Design qua regularity
Aquinas discusses the evidence of Design in creation using observation.
In the fifth of his Five Ways, he says, "Everything operates as to a
design." In Summa Theologiae, he links causation to purpose. Things
we observe in the universe are goal-directed and act in certain
ordered and purposive ways. E.g. Acorns always grow into oak trees
and not wombats.
Acting for goals & Intelligence
The fact that non-intelligent things (like acorns and plankton) always act
in certain ways for certain goals implies that they were given those goals
by intelligence because only intelligent beings can assign a purpose to
things and move that thing towards their purpose.
This means there must be natural laws (laws of nature/physics) which
govern the behaviour of things in the universe. Natural laws must have
an origin – an intelligent designer.
Archery example
Aquinas used the analogy of an archer to illustrate the notion of
guiding intelligence and governance. The archer (intelligence) directs
and governs the arrow (object without intelligence) towards its end
purpose (the target). Without the archer giving the purposive direction,
the arrow would remain in the quiver.
Similarly, natural laws have no intelligence but display
order and regularity that are directed towards an end purpose; this
requires the explanation of intelligent guidance and governance. This
intelligent being must be God.
