Mihály Csíkszentmihályi’s Flow St- A flow state, also known colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full invo
enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation in one's sense of time.
- The following six factors encompass the experience of flow:
1) Concentration on the current moment that is intense and focused
2) Action and awareness are combined
3) A lack of reflective self-awareness
4) A feeling of personal initiative or control over a situation or activity
5) A temporal experience distortion occurs when one's subjective perception of time is affected
6) Intrinsically rewarding experience with the activity
- Other factors from Kendra Cherry include:
• Immediate feedback
• Feeling the potential to succeed
• Feeling so engrossed in the experience, that other needs become negligible
- People can, for the most part, choose where they want to focus their attention. When someone is in the flow state, they are entirely focused on the activity at hand and lose awaren
including time, people, distractions, and even basic bodily demands, without even realising it. This occurs, according to Csikszentmihályi, because the individual in the flow state de
attention to the work at hand; there is no more attention to be assigned.
- Examples of people being in a flow state could be a child painting a model ship, a violinist perfecting every note in a song, or Raja Yoga practitioner being a state of flow in the practi
psychological absorption in the object of meditation.
- A sporting example of an athlete being in the flow state is Olympic taekwondo athlete Dae-hoon Lee. When he fought Seok-bae Kim, he was in a flow state as from the get go, Dae-h
continuously racking up points throughout his fight and eventually won by a 45 point margin with a score of 65 points to 20 points.
