1.1. Leland et al. (2013: 44) believe that Brian Cambourne’s seven conditions of
learning apply to all cultural groups and to older students as well.
1.1.1 Which “conditions of learning” are met in each of the following
scenarios? Give ONE reason to justify each of your answers.
a) A teacher brings an empty cereal box to class and reads the nutritional
information on the back of the box. When she finds a difficult word, she asks
the class to help her look it up in the dictionary.
In scenario, the condition of learning met is "Immersion" because the teacher is
exposing the students to authentic reading material and incorporating real-life
examples into the lesson.
b) A teacher has high-frequency words on cards posted on the class walls and
pencils and paper on each desk.
In scenario b), the condition met is "Demonstration" as the teacher is providing visual
aids to help students learn and understand high-frequency words.
c) A teacher allows learners to choose a book for weekend reading from the
class library. (9 marks)
In scenario c), the condition met is "Responsibility" as the teacher is allowing
students to choose their own reading material and take responsibility for their own
learning.
1.1.2 How would you apply “Response” as a condition of learning, in a loud-
reading lesson at Foundation or Intermediate Phase level? Your answer must
not exceed 150 words.(6 marks)
In a loud-reading lesson at Foundation or Intermediate Phase level, the condition of
"Response" can be applied by encouraging active participation from the students.
This can be done by asking open-ended questions about the text before, during, and
after the loud-reading session to prompt students to respond to the content and
demonstrate their understanding. Additionally, the teacher can incorporate activities
that require students to engage with the text, such as by having them summarize,
make predictions, or express their opinions about the text. This will ensure that
students are actively processing the information as they read out loud, and will also
provide opportunities for the teacher to assess their comprehension and provide

the text.
