1. Dr. Seuss' Contri- Before being a children's book author, he made racist po-
bution litical cartoons; very anti-Japanese. Wrote "Horton Hears
a Who" to apologize for his actions. Message in Horton: no
matter how small a group of people are, they still deserve
to be protected.

2. Issei and Nisei Issei is first generation Japanese American; they did not
obtain citizenship until 1952. Nisei is second generation;
changed their perspective once they saw America's poor
treatment of their parents.

3. Chinese Exclu- Very first wave of Japanese were brought in as work re-
sion Act cruitment to replace the Chinese after the Chinese Exclu-
sion Act. Additionally, came into Hawai'i as sugar plantation
workers (from 1885-1924).

4. Racial Profiling Definition: During WW2, racial propaganda were made
to "inform" American soldiers of the physical differences
between the Chinese (Allies) and Japanese (enemies).
Significance: Americans racialized Asians to a point where
they couldn't tell the difference.

5. Concentration Definition: After the Executive Order, the Japanese were
Camps forced into temporary sites until camps could be built (ex
Santa Anita Assembly). These self- built homes lacked
privacy, had poor insulation, and forced everyone to eat
together.
Significance: Relocation centers broke up families; chil-
dren's education were disrupted-- many did not obtain high
school diplomas.

6. "Enemy Alien" Definition: Government term referring to the belief that
Japanese fishers had boats that would contact Japan over-
seas. Farmers owned (unwanted and cheap) land near
military bases; as a result, American government thought
Japanese immigrants sabotaged the US through espi-
onage.
Significance: Believed the Japanese immigrants were loyal
only to Japan, therefore they could not become citizens.
