HEAVEN MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS- The establishing shots of clouds and sunsets or sunrises make it feel quite heavenly
- We see a woman in a red dress which is quite a sexualized image, with connotations of
prostitution. She’s walking down into a dark alley, showing the loss of a higher power has
placed her in the darkness
- The image of somebody in a blue hoodie and an old man shows there's a lot of diversity
in terms of age and gender and ethnicity
- Lots of low angles of the singer create this idea of her being very powerful
- The lens flares and the angelic light behind her are almost religious
- There are lots of images of distressed or graffitied buildings so it's quite distressed and
working class
- It gives the impression of this being kind of a social realist and quite a low budget music
video
- The red jacket on the girl combined with the image of the graffitied wings behind her
makes her quite powerful and almost like a religious figure. Could be a “fallen angel”, red
symbolising devilish imagery anchored by the wings around. Perhaps she’s too far gone
- “Egypt'' in graffiti. It means being shut in restraint, misery, tribulation and distress.
- There are some shots of a tunnel with light at the end which adds to this theme of
heaven portraying the idea that there is hope on the other side or it could connote death
- There's no real clear narrative going on and it leaves the meaning of the music video
open to interpretation
- “Fear is your only God” on a window to signify that fear helps to persuade our choices
- The singer is pictured in black which is strong and powerful
- The costume almost makes her look like a religious leader
- We also see her with lots of pink flowers, florals and in a garden area which is a typically
feminised representation, could refer to the Garden of Eden
- A woman dancing in a white dress adds to this sense of purity and innocence
- There's a man on the floor which suggests perhaps involvement in drugs
- The lighter can also signify flames of hell
- The close-up shot leaves it ambiguous to the audience
- There’s a person under a blanket which acts as a signifier that they may be homeless
- Some audiences are really going to like the fact that there's a lot of diversity within the
video in terms of gender or ethnicity especially those who are misrepresented
- She appears to be crying out in an audacious plea for acceptance as she wakes “with
good intentions”
- Extreme close-up of faces perhaps calls for a soul to be elevated as eyes are considered
“windows to the soul”
- “Will you recognise me, when I’m stealing from the poor?” anchored by the children to
create binary opposition between a thief and an innocent person
- “But the day, it always lasts too long”- reinforced by the setting as many of them sacrifice
their days in order to provide for their families
