1.) Know different methods that can support communication with
individuals with sensory loss.
1.1 - Identify specific methods of communication that may be used with
individuals with sensory loss that utilise hearing, vision and touch.
• Sight Loss
When speaking with an individual with sight loss, make sure you speak
clearly and at a decent pace, do not overload the individual with a quick
paced conversation as this can be confusing and may disorientate the
individual.
A dimly lit room can be a struggle for people with normal vision let alone
people with a visual impairment, so it is important that their surroundings
are brightly lit and clear of clutter.
• Hearing Loss
When talking to an individual with loss of hearing, you will need to speak
clearly and loudly. Sometimes you may have to speak at a slower pace and
repeat yourself if required.
Sometimes even when speaking clearly and loudly it is difficult to
communicate with a person with hearing loss when there is a lot of
background noise.
Talking to the individual in a quieter room can be beneficial or if the
individual knows sign language, you can communicate that way.
• Deafblindness and touch
Deafblindess is an individual that has both sight and hearing impairments,
also known as dual sensory loss.
Deafblindness can be a disability an individual was born with or that a
person has acquired throughout their lives as they get older.
If someone was born deafblind they would not have experienced spoken
language or written language as a form of communication which makes it
