B1. Description of Role, Population, Courses, and Environment
Describe the academic nurse educator’s role, student population, courses taught, and learning
environment.
For my academic nurse educator interview, I spoke with Mrs. Michelle
Carswell, a nursing program instructor at Tarleton State University. Mrs. Carswell holds a
masters-degree in nursing education. She is currently the core professor for a lower-level nursing
course called Concepts of Professional Nursing. This course is one of the first three courses that
nursing students have to take once they are accepted into the program. This course does not have
clinical hours, but she does serve as a clinical instructor for another nursing course called “Care
of Adults”, so she works with a group of students once a week throughout the semester at a local
hospital. The qualifications needed to teach undergraduate nursing students in the classroom is a
minimum of a master’s degree (MSN). Teachers with a Bachelor’s Degree can become clinical
instructors for many nursing programs, but some may still require a Master’s Degree even to do
clinical instruction.
There are about one hundred students in each nursing class at Tarleton State University.
Of these students, the majority range from 20-30 years of age and are mostly female. The BSN
, program is typically a 4 to 5 year degree. The program itself is broken into 5 semesters, so the
length of time taken to achieve that degree usually depends on how quickly students complete
their prerequisite requirements. Embedded into the program are simulation labs, pharmacology,
mental health, obstetrics, leadership and management, and acute care courses. Most of the
courses also include a clinical component in addition to classroom instruction. There are multiple
healthcare facilities in the area that the nursing program has relationships with, so students may
have the opportunity to perform clinical instruction at multiple sites, which is good because the
students are able to see how different facilities work. All of the courses use a blended method of
learning. Instruction is still mostly done face-to-face in the classroom, with the addition of
clinical practice and simulations. But there is an online component that provides more learning
information, quizzes, and course exams.
The learning environment at Tarleton is one that fosters independence and success, while
using evidence-based and value-driven knowledge and skills that are essential for professional
nursing careers. Mrs. Carswell’s role, as well as all educators in the Tarleton Nursing program, is
that of an instructor, evaluator, resource provider, facilitator, curriculum developer, and
motivator.
B2. Summary of Responsibilities
Summarize how the following responsibilities relate to the role of an academic nurse educator:
• facilitator of learning
• communicator and collaborator
• professional development activities
• change leader
• educational advocate
