1. Knowledge:
o Not just information

o A sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs
o Usually the first sentence of the paragraph, sometimes at the end
o Makes it less likely for writers to introduce irrelevant matter
16. Sentence fragment:
o Are groups of words that look like sentences but aren’t
o Usually appear before or after the independent clause to which they belong
17. Methodology:
o System of methods used for a particular activity, filed of study,…
o Should be linked back to the literature to explain why you’re using certain
methods
18. Tone:
o The attitude a writer takes towards his subject and reader.
o Varies depending on the writer’s purpose, subject, audience and interests
o E.g.: formal vs informal writing
19. Controlling idea:
o A topic sentence has a subject and a predicate, the controlling idea is part of
the predicate.
o A controlling idea will help you to limit your subject
20. Unity:
o The quality of sticking to one idea from start to finish
